Coronavirus Adventures

Post by Ice Cream Jonsey »

My company said to work from home for the next two weeks. I'm going to go ahead and do it. I feel there is a good chance I will get this virus due to the fact that I flew home and my wife's line of work. Least I can do is hang around the house (which - twist my arm, why doncha.)

What are you guys seeing out there?

Both times we went to Wegmans in Rochester they were totally out of paper products. The toilet paper people are SO GODDAMN DUMB. It's made in America, dummies. If you're at home and run out you can always shower. So dumb, the people that grabbed all of it.

Denver restaurants are closed to sitting down, but open for take out and delivery I guess.

Wanted to see former JCers Da King and Jethro Q. Walrustitty along with Aardvark on the trip, but I didn't want to be the guy that passed it to them if I end up having it. And even then - I didn't want to NOT have it and then someone in their families get it, because I am always going to be That Guy That Flew During Virus Week.

Flying, by the way, was amazing - half-empty planes is the way to go.

How are all y'alls parents handling this? Is "not going to let anyone tell them what to do" an experience you're experiencing?

When I see people worry or be scared about this, I just tell them something nice. Like "imagine if this was Ebola."

This article's click-baity headline disappointed me. I thought it was about a Coronavirus Interactive Fiction program you were writing!

Hmm, maybe this might be something worth doing for IFComp 2020. When does that start, by the way?

You can start making a game now! I think the deadline to enter will be September 1st, 2020 and the games get released to the public around the last day of September.

Tdarcos + Hugo in the 2020 competition would be amazing. I have been working on a game to submit and I hope some of you other guys are as well!

Yesterday via email we were informed that three of our coworkers have tested positive for Coronavirus. Statistically, that's not bad. We have approximately 60,000 employees, and the three employees live and work in three different states, which means they contracted the virus through social interaction and not the workplace. That being said, one of the three people works in a building my wife visited last week. It's a ten story building and not likely that they had direct contact, but you never know. Someone had to be the one to push the elevator button right after that person.

Over the weekend, the night when other states began strongly suggesting (and in some cases, enforcing) social distancing, our governor tweeted a picture of himself and his four kids at a crowded restaurant, assuring people it was okay to go out to public restaurants and eat dinner with large groups of people. It was a pretty ignorant thing to do. The following day, he declared a state of emergency for the entire state while still telling reporters and staff members that he did not plan to change his behavior.

This week is spring break. Last Wednesday we received word that school would close on Friday, and over the weekend we received word that all Oklahoma schools will remain closed through April 6. My kids are pretty spoiled and for them this means three weeks off and time to play computer games and do whatever, but for countless others who depend on the school system for meals and a place for their kids to hang out while one or both parents work, it has to be crushing news.

Over the past several years I have been working from home 2-3 days a week. Tomorrow, all employees are being asked to work from home so that they can stress test the capabilities of our remote/vpn solution. I don't think the question is whether or not it will break, but rather what number of users will break the system, so that they'll know the true capacity. I realize not every person is able to work from home and not every job facilitates it, so I feel very fortunate in the fact that I can perform my job remotely.

Oklahoma seems to be 1-2 days behind the rest of the country in reaction times. Casinos and libraries closed over the weekend. Norman (a large college town) is adopting the carry-out/curfew rules some other states are implementing, but we haven't seen a state-wide mandate yet. I'm sure it's coming.

I think the urge to buy all the toilet paper is just another weird symptom of this virus, like eating brains is in the zombie movies.

Stupid question of the day: can i catch Coronavirus from contact with all the people on (This BBS/Facebook/Twitter/YouTube/YouTube Hangouts/Discord/other social media)?

Response: Oh yes, all of them are raging cesspools. There are reports that Facebook gives you herpes, and some people have even gotten antibiotic-resistant gonorrhea from Twitter. Those massively followed Tweets can be deadly.

The amazing thing that, for Facebook and Twitter, anyway, that first sentence is true.

Wegmans had to station an employee on a pallet of toilet paper and hand out two rolls per customer. I guess some of them were giving him crap about only two rolls. Sorry for the bad joke but What. The. Fuck. People!

They were also buying bottled water like it was a hurricane, not a pandemic. I have a feeling our tap water won't stop running because of this.

You cough a little. Then you develop a fever. Then you die. 28 days later you rise as a zombie.

No, I mean for real. I've never seen 28 Days Later but that sounds like the entire plot..so I guess I don't have to now.

The fact that gsdgsd and his family went through this is awful, I can't imagine how terrible that must have been in all this. If it makes you feel any better at all, Greg, your experience is what finally prompted my father to stay at home for the next week (for starters, I hope) instead of going into work. He checks all the boxes for who this hits the worst.

I'm about two and a half weeks in, and now (hopefully) past the worst. A lot has gone on, so some highlights:

* everyone emphasizes the fever. I have not had a fever at all, and because of that (and because I haven't traveled/known anyone who's traveled/been in contact with known cases), it took a long time for doctors to worry about me. I have been sick since February 28; the first confirmed case in Georgia didn't come until March 2. We were told yesterday that we have it.

* this is the one of the two or three worst illnesses I've ever had -- just an absolutely debilitating cough, severe fatigue, inability to move. My wife and I are pretty healthy/fit people -- I can only imagine what this is going to do to people less so.

* all the anecdotal evidence about "kids don't get hit hard by this" seems to be accurate. We were terrified about my six-year-old daughter getting this - she has some respiratory issues - but she and my son both just got mild colds. Meanwhile we're lying around half-dead.

* the health care system is getting severely overwhelmed already and it's going to get much, much worse. My wife had to go to the ER twice in the last few days with breathing problems; the second time they told her not to come back unless she needed to be intubated. When an ambulance came for her the first time, they acknowledged they had no protocols yet for how to deal with COVID patients. Our primary care clinic has shut down until they can set up remote medicine. Several doctors/nurses have told us in recent weeks that they do not have the resources/guidance to properly deal with any of this. I am probably very likely that I'm one of the earliest to get this.

* an ER doctor told my wife (on her second visit) that it's presumed that 25% of the U.S. population has this by now, and most are not yet showing symptoms. Testing is a joke (and they didn't even bother with me - just saying yes, your wife's got it so you've got it) - impossible to get and very flawed. A woman I know who is showing symptoms (and saw me the day I started getting sick) can't find anyone to even give her hints about getting a test. A friend's father is very sick, has all the symptoms, and can't get a test.

Man, what else. I've forgotten plenty, I'm sure. Ask anything, I'll answer whatever I can.

My thoughts exactly! That was much worse. Much higher fatality rate.

I've got a theory that this was actually part of a mind-control experiment. Actually, this isn't a theory at all. Look around at all the dumb fucks falling for it. NARMEAN?!

The way your governor handled things is worse than ours, surprisingly. But it still is BS. People around here in central NC were already staying away from sitting down to eat out. The last couple of days I was out there may have been maybe 2 other occupied tables. WE HAD THIS. But today he bans eating sitting down to eat out.

I'm very thankful that ultimately my job relies on people watching something over a stream. And yes, it sucks for the kids and it also sucks for everyone that can't work from home or doesn't work in a grocery store. Tons of people are going to lose money from this over-hype and stupidity. Like how they told people not to buy masks at all in the beginning etc in contrast to Asian countries.. I'll save that rant for later.

CONGRATS! Your immune system will thank you later. Are you doing OK though? From what I've heard from people who have got this it sucks.. but it doesn't suck like Swine Flu sucked.

Edit: Whups, missed your detailed reply. Thank you and good luck!

Seriously. Billy Mays and Jizaboz are correct. I stood in a Soviet bread line today so I could take home the amount of Purell I could serendipitously gank in my non-bowlcut hair and meanwhile TDARCOS is using sanitizer to oil the gold toilet they gave him at St. (Leg) Elsewhere.
