SC2 vs. 4X

Post by pinback »

SC2 made me a better 4X player, because SC2 is nothing but a 4X game sped up by a factor of a thousand. It's amazing, but ALL of the concepts translate directly.

This is my thought for the moment.

Care to delve deeper into this thought? Precisely how do the normal 4x concepts relate to SCII?

Explore?
Expand?
Exploit?
Exterminate?

Well, you do all four of those things in SC2.

Moreover, the basic, overarching strategy of both is, essentially:

Focus on building "workers" (SC2) or "population" (4x) as much and as fast as possible until you 1) are able to shift resources to research, and/or 2) are forced to shift resources to military.

I think in both you are basically balancing the expansion of economy, military, and map knowledge/control. In a 4X you spend 10 of hours stroking your chin as you contemplate turn 46, while in SC2 you have to have all of this established in about 5-7 minutes.

Watching LagTV laugh at shitty players fail at this has actually done a lot more for my understanding than trying to make sense of a pro-level cast.
