[POLL BUILDING] Solo artist that was better than the band they came from!

Post by pinback »

Here's a new feature, called POLL BUILDING. We're not choosing our answer, we're just deciding what the options are gonna be. Lists are acceptable, we're not just looking for what you think the answer is, just answers that you think should be on the poll. Here, I'll start!

Don Henley
Peter Gabriel
Aimee Mann

See what I'm doing here? Let's see how this goes.

This is a man that hates the Eagles!

I'm going to go with Eric Clapton vs Cream and Derek and the Dominoes. I don't like Cream!

I'm not saying I agree with my choices, just that they are reasonable choices someone might vote for. This is how we build a poll!

Are we just comparing an artist's solo work versus the work their band did together or are we also considering the artist's contributions to the band's music in our comparison? I was thinking John Fogerty would be a good pick since he was way more talented than the other members of Creedence Clearwater Revival and contributed the most to the band's sound, but CCR's music is better than Fogerty's solo stuff so I dunno if that's a valid pick.

My other question is what do we do if a frontman or frontwoman is strongly associated with a band which might have a rotating cast of supporting members. Are Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention separate entities or just Frank Zappa? What about Jimi Hendrix and the Jimi Hendrix Experience? What about Louis Armstrong and Louis Armstrong and His Hot Five for God's sake?

I just need some answers and then I'll participate. Thanks in advance, Teach.

Thurston Moore. While I have always been a fan of Sonic Youth, his only solo album: Psychic Hearts is one of my favoritae albums of all time. I wish he would create another.

Steve Perry and Journey, I see, we're just doing the opposite, it is Opposite Day.

Flack brought up one that totally made me go "Well, duh".

Michael Jackson should definitely be high on this list.
