I call no retroactive parameters for hamburger sandwich research! You asked, I supplied.

It's the old timey name they used, like how public transportation vehicles were once called omnibuses.

Language evolves, and though the sandwichers here narrowly outnumber the non-sandwichers, we will prevail.

Speaking as someone who gets an everything bagel with scallion cream cheese on the reg, I am %100 on-board with this.

What is the definition of a sandwich? Presumably, two pieces of bread separated by an edible material which is intended to be consumed as is*. If someone wanted to eat three pieces of bread, that would be a bread sandwich. If the material is peanut butter and jelly, we'd call that a "peanut butter and jelly sandwich. If it is two sandwiches created by combining the last slice to put the sandwiches into a double-stack, that is a "Dagwood sandwich." If it had pastrami instead, we'd call it a "pastrami sandwich". A "hamburger" is short for "a fried ground beef sandwich." End of story.

A hot dog is a tube sausage in a folded piece of bread. It lacks the second piece of bread, ergo it is not a sandwich. A hot dog between two pieces of bread then becomes a "hot dog sandwich." If there is nothing between the two pieces of bread, it's just two pieces of bread, and is not a sandwich. Since a loaf of bread is intended for some other use, it is not a sandwich until placed into service with non-bread filler.

* This discussion only applies to sandwiches made of bread. Sometimes compounds using alternative materials placed together, like, "the steel is sandwiched around the aluminum to make a different structure," is not related to this conversation.

Wait, what if the hot dog bread covers 270 degrees around the circumference of the hot dog? That's more than 180 degrees

Also, what if the bottom of the bun splits, and ohhhh shit, now it's two separate pieces of bread. Is it a sandwich now?

We will prevail.
