I hope to do a comeback album with my band one of these years and it is good to know that NPR won't hold notability against us for their year-end list.

The only ones I’ve even heard of is Adele and Lil Nas. Adele looked better fat and I have zero comment on wtf ever it is Lil Nas does.

Well, Adele is the only name I know on the list. When will they start playing these artists on the classic rock station in Rochester?

I said the same thing, I realize I'm old when the only name on a list of the top 50 albums I recognized was Adele.

I know some recent artists: Post Malone, Ed Sheeran, Louis Capaldi and Harry Stiles, plus (depending on whether or not you consider he has talent) Justin Bieber. Either none of them released an album last year (given the lockdown, I could understand), or NPR doesn't think anything they released is important to be in the Top 50..

Ok, I have a take. These lists are dumb because music is so splintered. I like pop punk and electronica. Wellllll a certain kind of electronica, chillstep or whatever. Flack likes metal, Pinback likes that anarchy rock. None of us will ever convince the other of our favorite music's worth.

To objectively go, oh, Adele is 28 spots better than that Bo Jackson album - really? What if all I love is divorce rock?

You can't even really do it with games. There have to be 25 new games put on Steam each day. I could definitively speak to the best game of 1982, but now? Kind of hogwash!

You are right. This is the reason every "recommendation engine" ever made do such shitty jobs - because musical tastes are not transitive. Just because Pinback likes A and B does not mean that Flack, who also likes A, will be more likely to like B. There is no causation. It has bigger me for a long time why no one seems to realize that. I have an idea for a much more effective way to do it, which could probably becme a patentable algorithm worth a billion dollars, but I lack the resources and drive to do anything about it.

BTW, just got Johnathan Coulton's album "Some Guys". If you were alive in the 70s, you may like it.

It's quite a cool homage.

And it's the only music on that entire list that's worth a damn.

There's no such thing as an "album" anymore, only groups of tracks that get kinda vaguely bundled into a group of unrelated things. I think the last actual album I bought* was American Idiot.

* i. e.; bought when it was released.
