Small business owners

Post by Ice Cream Jonsey »

I'm on a Saints board and for the most part Saints fans are truly good ol' boys and a lot of the stereotypes that northerners believes about the south are just that, made up.

But a topic came up about how the Superdome needs people to work concessions during the season. And the thread is tapping into something that I have to laugh at. Apparently small business owners had a lot of their staff choose to sit on unemployment (during a pandemic) and not risk catching COVID-19. But to these smooth brains, this is their big opportunity to gain REVENGE at the fact that they paid less than the government did to do nothing:
I work in the staffing industry. Those that have been loyal in working will get the better opportunities. Those that I have called to work, and say they do not wish to work, will be ignored when they come looking for a job. Work ethic trumps all.
There was a pandemic you dumb fuck.
eah, I had some that left due to medical issues or had family members with health issues. I welcomed them back bc I understood. However, the ones that were physically able to work, that were posting stuff on social media about “Rights being violated” or “freedom this freedom that”, and trying to take a stand. They even bragged about getting unemployment……nope, can’t help you. I already filled your spot with someone else. I tried talking to them before they left about the mask situation. They tried litigation and that didn’t work in their favor, so they went a different route, as did I with able bodies. Now granted by law, I have to take them back, but they are definitely not getting their hours back nor the schedule they used to work. I got one day a week for 4 hours. Take it or leave it. Not trying to be a jerk about it, but I got a business to run, and they sure didn’t go about it the right way.
There was a pandemic, you dumb fuck.
Same here, had some employees who were sitting on the couch collecting unemployment while there was plenty of construction jobs to go around. They didn't want to go out in heat. Basically cost me some clients.

Now the jobs are drying up , just when they feel like working.

The jobs left I am giving to the ones who were already working during this round of stimulus.

At least I know they work hard and won't walk off a job because their feelings were hurt.
There was a pandemic, you dumb fuck.

Anyway, I'm loving this. These guys are obviously shit to work for and they think this is now their big chance to gain the upper hand on the people they've been paying garbage wages to for years.

Stadium concessions is the worst job I've ever done. I worked 1 day at the Finger Lakes Gaming and Racetrack concession stand. Hot, miserable, no tips, horrible work, no thanks I can't put in the time to get promoted to the dining room. As a bonus I had to be drug tested to sling hot dogs, fuck you ARAMARK.

That's the great thing, the NFL pulls in billions and is crying that nobody will sell Coke. Fucking pay them more. "Ewwwwww if they do that, a Coke will cost --" What? $10? Everything the right says about what will happen to the cost of products is actually happening at that level in stadiums and they still pay workers shit.

Hahaha the enemy! The smaller franchised coffee vending service company I worked for before my present job was bought out by those assholes. Sooo glad I got out of there like a month before that happened! I heard some stories from those who hung around years later.

I'm going to be totally honest, while I don't believe in drug testing for tech workers, I would like the people serving me hot dogs to be tested for everything. I like a pure dog.

I'm allowing waivers.

Back to the shitlords in the first post. All of them aren't going to hire people they know stopped working, so they have to hire people they don't know. People who are available. People who.... Aren't working? This is the great employment shuffle for jobs for douchebag business owners?

yeah, no, they still favor people with current jobs like they have for centuries. They're outsourcing the vetting of employees to other companies.

I am going to admit that I never cared if someone currently had a job or not when I was hiring people. I have seen people care about that and it's the weirdest thing. Hopefully people relax a little on that. It isn't a free opportunity to psychopathically lowball them and maaaaaaaaaaaaybe they are a tiny bit refreshed from not having a job for a bit. (Or maybe they are stressed to the max, who knows.)

It's so bad that when I got my latest job in February, after I received and signed my offer letter then I proceeded to give notice at the last piece of crap company and updated my LinkedIn. Got an invitation from my (now) boss for a third interview where he asked for a third reference. I asked him, is this because I gave notice and updated my linkedin? Yes, he said it was.

I had found that for a lot of companies, if you have a gap of six months on your resume, you essentially became almost unemployable. Okay, then, cut your asking price and try lesser jobs. so I scrounge the money to take two busses for an interview, the first I'd gotten in weeks. "Why are you willing to take a job you're clearly overqualified for?" I fought off the urge to punch the guy in the face and walk out. So I got mad and said the truth, "because over the last six months, every place I went to that I thought I was qualified for said I didn't have enough experience." On the way out, the interviewer who was escorting me out was interrupted by a technical person. He's asking his boss (my interviewer) a question, and he really didn't have an answer. I spoke up, saying, "excuse me," and proceeded to give the questioner a possible solution. He responded back, and we got into a discussion over the issue. After maybe a minute, the supervisor interrupts us to resume escorting me out. I figured it didn't matter, once they tell you that you're overqualified they're saying "you're too smart, know too much, and we will never hire you." But the discussion with the other guy was fun.

So then, instead of telling the truth, I revised my resume to change my dates of prior employment and previous employer to a different place, got an associate to pretend to be that former supervisor, and used him as a reference. I got a job in about a month.

This was back in 1996 and I suspect this attitude by employers has not changed.

Yeah, lying on resumes is a huge thing. Linkedin too. Studies show both sides lie in an interview. They say its not a toxic piece of shit company, i say i didn't get fired. Everyone wins.

I'm really hoping that with people taking care of themselves during the COVID-19 pandemic that it normalizes not working for a bit, OR that anyone who would turn their nose up at such a thing caught really bad COVID.
