Anyone eating chiles or hot sauce must keep this drink handy

Post by Tdarcos »

There is one beverage that is a "must have" for anyone eating - or trying to eat - high-heat, i.e. above ten thousand Scoville units. If you are consuming chiles, chili powder, or hot sauce with high-heat items, this beverage is important because its thickness produces a "detergent effect," and helps wash away the capcacin, which is what produces the heat in chiles and hot sauce. Water does not help and can make things worse, as it can spread the capcacin around. What beverage is so helpful for connoisseurs of spicy chiles? Milk, just plain old milk. Not sure if it was only cow juice or if alternatives work too, but i thought I'd pass this on.

Why, who knew?

Do cows eat a lot of hot stuff? Is that why milk does what it does?

You read that somewhere, and have no idea if it's true, which it isn't. Do you have any hangover advice while you're at it?

I just stick a spoonful of sour cream in my mouth if things get TOO out of control.

Dairy products vs water confirmed.

No, I know exactly where it came from. The History Channel's Modern Marvels episode about chiles and hot sauce. As an otherwise reputable source I presumed it was fact checked, and they showed it being used. I acceped it as plausible, I was not about to field-test it myself.

Paul, I know you don't have the capacity to understand this, and that's okay, but you have shared a fact that everyone who has ever eaten anything spicy already knows to a forum full of people who, for the most part, likes to eat spicy things.

I can understand, but let it be pointed out that not once did anyone, St any time, bother to comment when someone mentioned the side effects of eating brutal-type hot sauces and how they suffered, nobody ever said anything like, "but I did have some milk on hand," "and I didn't have milk, " or "dude, why didn't you have some milk?"

Further, Pinback responded saying I repeated something unverified, which implies he was saying either he did not believe it or he'd not heard it before. The way Pinhead replied was not of someone who understood the statement as well-known, but more of incredulousness.

Here's a fun experiment you can do from your bed. Ask the next five people who come into your room what is something people can drink to cool their mouth down after eating hot sauce.

No. I'd rather you not give them any money at all, frankly. All of their products are terrible. (The keychain is cool.)

Also, the milk/dairy thing is bullshit, even though everyone other than me was sitting around nodding their heads like we're just supposed to accept that as a fact because we've all heard it so often and hey, when I drank milk, the heat dissipated for a few seconds.

This is easy to prove. Here's how you do it:

1. Eat something extremely hot -- a fresh habanero, or a teaspoon of Reapercussion or Blair's Death or something.
2. Burn up until you can't stand it.
3. Take a sip of water.
4. Notice that the pain goes away just for that moment the water's in your mouth.
5. Notice that the searing pain returns as soon as you swallow.
6. Take a sip of milk.
7. Notice that the exact same thing happens with it, and this dairy/hot sauce myth is a load of crap.
8. Come back on this BBS and apologize to me personally.
I don't have to say anything. I'm a doctor, too.

Is there any liquid that CAN help wash out the heat, the burning heat? If you say alcohol we will all nod to that because it means we don't have to make any changes.

Well, there was that time she ratted out Jo for stealing a shirt as a birthday gift for Mrs. G.

They were all hot chicks so she gets a pass.

Hey Flack, when you ate that piece of chemical burn chocolate did you drink milk as an antidote?
I remember seeing a video of kids crying and spooning down buckets of ice cream because that pepper was so hot.

Unfortunately, I was standing in a server room at work and fairly ill-prepared for the experience.

I once tried to dull an extreme hot sauce by eating slightly mellower hot sauce. That didn't work, and also, nothing else works.
