Wow, the Happy Happy Joy Joy episode. That takes me back.
Okay, so I guess TNN has this "cartoon block" thing now, which generally looks fucking awful, but which I've been trying to catch just to assure myself. I mean, Adult Swim managed to surprise me, so maybe we can get a twofer. So I missed most of it this week, and most of it last week, but between the two weeks, I think I've sampled everything they have to offer. So we've got...
Gary the Rat: He's a rat! He's a lawyer! What's the difference?!?! AHAHAHAHAHA!!! High comedy!! This is apparently for those people who find Frasier too challenging. And too funny. It wants to be a black comedy, but it's neither black nor funny enough to qualify.
The Ren and Stimpy Adult Party Cartoon: Seriously, what is up with John Kfuckingcomplexlastname. The original Ren and Stimpy was basically a cultural milestone popping up out of nowhere when I was 12 after that fucking cartoon about the infants. The "Fuck Her Gently" video was a bit of casual genius. All the other cartoons on the now defunct website that I never watched because load times redifined the word "glacial" were supposed to be pretty good. But the Ripping Friends was just awful. And now this.
OMG Ren and Stimpy are gay! Hey, you know what, I think the Scooby Doo gang smokes pot, too! I mean, seriously, when the commercials kept featuring the pitcher/catcher line, I was expecting it to be one of those "play around with entendre" gags. Like they'd actually be in a baseball game or something, but kept spouting out gay innuendo without making it seem like they intended too. That's hardly ingenious, but it could have been fun if done right. But no, it turns out they're just fucking. Whohoo. You know, just because you're not on Nickelodean anymore and can hamhandedly portray your wacky not-quite-anthropomorphic cartoon characters as a gay couple doesn't mean you should. Or that it's at all funny to do so. Way to piss on your own legacy, Johnny.
Which reminds me:
Stan Lee's Stripperella: Kali's fucking tits. Actually, this seems to be the best of the bunch, which, I'll grant you, isn't saying much. It's pretty much the Tick with less humor and more pseudo-pornography. It captures the tone pretty well, but the gags aren't especially high-larious. Whatever. I've got nothing.
