Update: the problem causing my system to freeze wasn't chrome after all as it's still doing it with Brave so a guy on answers.microsoft said to to this to an almost similar symptom asked about there:

1. Open command prompt with administrator access
2. Type each command below and wait until scan is completed.
* sfc /scannow
* DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth
* DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth
* DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Which, at this rate will take all weekend apparently fifteen minutes for 10% just on the first scan.
Brave is fine, it does seem to wait to populate userid/password until I click into the box but I can live with that I guess. My old HP laptop is much happier with Brave, the mains are definitely back on line.
