Phoenix Point (PC, 2020)

Phoenix Point is a squad and turn-based tactical strategy game, designed by Julian Gollop, who is most famous for designing X-COM. X-COM was my second favorite game when I ranked them all 10 years ago and on one hand I wanted to play Phoenix Point and support this great man, but on the other hand, they took money from Epic MegaGames to be an exclusive for some amount of time and that's reprehensible.

But my curiosity won out!

I only played for 11 minutes tonight, that is where my life is unfortunately. Phoenix Point does not screw around. It gets to the point. There is an opening cinematic that tells you that the planet's weather is screwed up and there is a disease going around and Lovecraftian horrors have reached planet Earth. This is very quick. They avoid the typical fantasy RPG problem of naming the 4th noun as a made-up word before you have engaged in gameplay. This game very much appreciates your time.

Within moments I was shooting aliens! This looks nice, has a good tutorial, sounds pleasant and has a nice camera change when you go to shoot an alien in the face that I did not take a screenshot of. I would absolutely keep playing this game.

Because of its release, I know nothing of its limitations. The world of Phoenix Point is limitless. I hope the guy who mastered the genre has some cool new ideas, but if not this is totally fine as well.
