Huh. I learned some valuable comic history here as I really didn't know much about him.

Also, that cover with the green-haired girl is fucking awesome.

Probably my all-time favorite comic book creator. Really a sad day.

This went off the rails, but it was the Justice League thread I was thinking of, I wanted to talk about Keith Giffen.

I was at an age where I was very ready to be influenced into what I was into, what I liked, what I wanted to follow along with. I want to say it was the mid to late 1980s.

I was into PC games - I still am, for as much as I procrastinate, I do occasionally post about those. I liked George Effinger's books which I found as a teenager. I would buy comic books and have them sent to the house - Daredevil, Avengers, Captain America - but I was really just not into comics from DC until one fateful day...

I think I saw this on a comic book stand, I can't imagine what would have made me purchase it with my own money in 1990. But cheesecake aside, it was different, it was funny. I loved the comics I was getting each month, but the concept of there being a comic each month that was just meant to make you laugh with superheros - I had simply never experienced anything like it before.

Keith Giffen plotted all of that, invented all of that with the Justice League.

He didn't specifically do the dialogue - he *brought in* a guy to collaborate with, J.M. DeMatteis. who is still with us and who I love (and who is using BlueSky, where he announced Keith's passing). The mix of comedy and drama is something that has really stuck with me and I am sad that Keith is no longer with us. 70 is far, far too young for someone with a mind like his.

I still have the comic books he did. They are in the garage. They are some of the best pure entertainment I can think of.

I do! I need to check to make sure my N64 has the port first, though, right?

There's a pretty good comic tracker.

You missed it

sure, if you can find a newer model used one that has had the port removed. It doesn't matter how you got it. All you need to do is call them, give them the serial # of the used one missing the digital AV port, and they'll ship you out a new (or refurbished) "older" model with all the ports intact.

Hey... I just saw what you wrote, Jack, about component video and also caught this on another forum:
If it's anything like their DS practices, you'll call them and give them a credit card number. They'll then ship your new Gamecube, and you can ship the old one once the new one arrives. If you don't ship it back, you get charged for a new Gamecube. Maybe you should call them.
Is this true? And will they do it for a used system?

UPDATE: found the box for the Gamecube but no cable. Will keep looking.

It's gotta be here somewhere.

by Jack Straw » Mon Jan 24, 2005 1:38 pm

OK. Let me first make sure I still have my stock composite cable as I just found out that my shiny new component cable I am slacking on this very moment picking up from UPS also needs a regular cable hooked up for L and R audio. Which is not a problem if I can locate my stock cable. If I can't find it I'll need to either use my S-video cable or find another composite cable.

Whew.

I've been looking at switchboxes. this is fine if you don't need optical audio switching. That one has a powered AC adapter and retails for $99.

and yes, new gamecubes do regular red-white-yellow and also s-video with a different cable. (If you need an S-video cable I'll sell mine cheap or trade for a copy of your game, don't need mine now that I got the component) I have the legit cable direct from big N.
Ooh! That sounds like a killer trade. Lemme get your mailing address and I'll send it out.

(I have been meaning to send one to Kent as well -- Kent, if you're out there, I left your copy at home when I went to NY for Christmas and only just got it re-mailed to me. It will be going out ASAP!)

If I don't kill the zombies in Resident Evil 4... who will?

Fucking fuck, people. Maybe you could raise the xcomplaints in the same goddamn year I make the original post. Maybe? And don't buy a Gamecube for one ffucking game that is coming out eventuaully for a system you alread own. Pussy.

Man.. you just lost it there for a second regarding the Gamecube!

(You don't know anyone selling theirs, do you?)

Also, I don't have an HDTV. The thing does have S-video and RCA plug support, right? (I need to get a switchbox for s-video so I can choose between my DVD player, dish, PS2 and hopefully future Gamecube in nice, neat s-video without having to plug and unplug things.)
