No, not MAME. The N64 emulator is Daedelus..

I'll keep them grapes peeled.

by Lex » Mon Dec 02, 2002 5:39 pm

N64 ROMS 300%-or-so.

by Ice Cream Jonsey » Mon Dec 02, 2002 4:28 pm

Wait, the X-box is running MAME 300% too quickly or N64 ROMs? It' s MAME, right?

I wonder how cheap I can get an X-box for after Christmas. Straw, if you can, keep your eye out for me. If you know anyone who is looking to get rid of theirs I will probably be an interested buyer come January 1st. All I really care about is that it works; if it's already modded then that is cool, too. I am looking forward to dropping a new hard drive in it and so forth.

Yeah, but they're porting Project64.

And I don't think it's necessarily a negative that such an early leak runs at 300% speed. Certainly it's easier to slow the emu down than it is trying to optimize and speed it up.

Also, as far as I know, Xbox is the only console with even an attempt at N64 emulation.

by Lex » Thu Nov 28, 2002 8:07 am

Eh, in theory. The only emu out right now runs at about 300% speed and has no sound; they abandoned it due to being nicked for using the XDK. Now that a free alternative to the XDK has FINALLY been released, we may well see it again, however.

I really didn't like the N64, until I found out how little memmory each cartridge holds. When I found out PerfectDark was done in 64megabytes, I had unflagging respect for the coders.

Or was it Goldeneye that was 64megs? Or maybe that was 32. I dunno.

by Jack Straw » Wed Nov 27, 2002 10:31 pm

True, but you can download N64 games and play them on your Xbox!

by AArdvark » Wed Nov 27, 2002 9:55 pm

That's cool, but its hard to download n64 games that fit in the console. Somehow the plastic case doesn't download well. I guess cd driven consoles are the future. unless you count the cell chips thing that'll be coming out in a couple years.

So a smiley face sticker on the front side of the x box is a mod?

Just kidding. I could never see the reaoning behind buying a console system. Oh, I have an N64 ( with 4 whole carts)
it sits under the couch, gatering dust. maybe once a year, I pull it out and play Star Wars for 10 minutes. Boring.

I'd rather downl---(get my programs from other sources that are more accesable) my games for the PC. sure, I cant play Halo or Super Donkey Zelda Brothers 3D, but I guess that's my loss., right? I get more than enough pleasure playing this stuff on my multi function PC. sides I'm not the 12-hours-in- front-of-the-telly-gaming kind of guy. Still haven't beaten Dungeon Siege or Medal of Honor yet. that's what save features are for.

Logically, X-boxes ought to be selling for $50 used right now. Only they won't be. But if they are, I am happy to go grab one for a price around that which obviously won't work on X-Box Live (and I don't want to subscribe to that anyway) I would definitely go and grab it. Aside from there being good things about Deathrow and the Buffy game (and I hate that fucking show, but the game sounds like fun) the bunch of us who got kicked out of Old Man Murray are starting a new site, and it would be handy if I could pitch in as the console screenshot guy.

No idea what goes into taking screenshots from your TV, but still.

He kind of needs an Xbox first, tho. But that'd rock; I'm totally not into sports games at all, but I seriously liked the demo I played of... shit! The names just gone! Ach, with the Tron frisbee and the bullet-time nads-kicking. And ludicrous number of beeps on the official demo.

But it's fucking rock solid. I don't know how I'd be online, as I tend to just kick the shit out of whoever is nearest the enemy goal(s, depending on level) until bullet-time is incurred. Then, eventually, the frisbee gets sent to me.

But I've never played a sports game where your strategy is seriously altered by what level you're playing on. On some, the goals are wall-mounted, on others there's a raised platform you can hockey-jump up on, in other you can run behind the goals and beat the shit out of someone where no-one's looking... It just totally rocks. Maybe not a "purchase" game, but certainly a "l33t + XBconnect" game.

by Jack Straw » Tue Nov 26, 2002 6:02 pm

Deathrow is one of the supported games for XBConnect. Cool, I'll have to fire it up. Gamespot gave it a glowing review but I didn't really give it much of a chance.
I can get you a copy of it if you'll be here for Xmas... I think it'll fit on a CD.

by Jack Straw » Tue Nov 26, 2002 5:59 pm

Yeah, I have that game. Only played it for about 10 minutes (like most of my games) but it looked solid enough. "uninspiring" graphics but I've never heard the work "motherfucker" in such a short time playing anything.

There are two competing matchmaker programs. Gamespy Tunnel used to be at www.gamespy.com/tunnel but I don't see it there now. The better is the afformentioned XBConnect which they are constantly improving and works with all system link games, whereas Gamespy has areas for different games (last time I checked it was Halo and MotoGP only). It's completely possible Gamespy scrapped the project when they saw these guys kicking their asses.

Basically what it does is fool the system link games into thinking that players over the internet are right there hooked up like a physical LAN. It requires a PC to run the program on and a router, both of which I believe you have.

On a related note - is there some kind of shortage for PS2 network adaptors or something? I can't find one fucking ANYWHERE.. supwiddat?

!!!

I can't believe I haven't heard about this yet. Time for me to do some research. If I were to get an X-box I would definitely want it to play MAME. I can accept not using X-box Live if that's the tradeoff, but I was unaware that an alternative on-line option existed.

Hey, have you seen Deathrow at all? That game seems to look completely tits. From its description, it's killer-app material for me, and making me seriously consider getting an X-box. You don't happen to have it, do you?

by Jack Straw » Tue Nov 26, 2002 4:08 pm

Awesome, best of luck Lik-Sang.

As far as the Xbox live debacle, yeah, it's a huge fuckup. Apparently there is NO WAY to remove your box from the shitlist, even if you remove the mod, even if you bought it used along with 3 controllers, 20 Live games and the Live headset half an hour ago.
By design they made the serial ID unable to be whitelisted again, and pretty soon there'll be a lawsuit, being that right now people are buying boxes that DO NOT FUNCTION AS ADVERTISED, ie, they cannot use Xbox live which is supposed to be one of the main selling points over the competition.

Ah, fuck em. XBConnect works like magic, and the people on it tend to have a higher skill level (being that they need to have a network set up and have at the very least basic computing/networking knowledge)

And why does Adam call himself "Bruce", is a question I've wondered about for a year or so.
It's actually a fairly simple explanation.

When IF-Mud started, I went over there and created an account.

Only Adam Cadre had beaten me to the name "Adam".

About that time we were going through a Monty Python phase on rec.arts.int-fiction, and the Philosophers Sketch was getting a lot of attention. So I was hunting around for a nickname, and "One of the Bruces" came to mind.

That's, um, the whole story, really.

Bruce
