I can assure everyone, except Worm (who refuses to engage in this shit) that the DeepQantas tile set from the following URL is awesome:

http://dwarf.lendemaindeveille.com/inde ... t_Tilesets

Please download it and use it, if you think it might help you enjoy DWARF FORTRESS, which is one of the top 100 games ever made and therefore kicking out an entry in my previous list.

Two of my seven dwarves have died of thirst. I told them to make a well two hours ago, while they were still alive. Two of the dwarves that died were completely fucking useless and spent most of the game doing nothing, when they had all the ability in the world to make a well and get some water. I'm glad they are dead. I have never hated two dwarves with such a complete and utter loathing.

I spent about six hours on it tonight, and proclaim it one of the best game ever made. I have a tileset, but only for the dwarves and cats. Everyone else gets to be ASCII.

I had one issue where nobody was doing any work on the inside except my two miners. I thought that this was perhaps due to my other dwarves just being lazy assholes. In fact, I had closed off a section getting through to the two halves of my fortress and once I dug out another route everyone got busy. It was amazing. You think through a problem with a bit of logic in this game and it rewards you.

Looks like somebody made a tileset for it. I loved the fact that your brain would start to "see" things as they were in Dwarf Fortress, but perhaps this tile set is for the best.

(And the ASCII graphics are truly meaningless. Since you can look at any time, they make no difference in this game.)

(I can totally see how this game could simply END one's free time. I'm hooked already. If the NFL didn't start tonight, I would have hit this up the instant I got home. My next WIP will be late because of Dwarf Fortress, I suspect.)

(I yearn to know what placing near a "haunted" area does. I YEARN!)

Thanks. I had no idea that, to mine, you needed to "paint" a section of the map to mine. I thought you just hit enter and they mined that square. I would have never figured out the way you actually note the area on my own.

Aces! I'm off to a start. I can get my two miners to mine, but nobody else. Now that I type that, that's probably because I don't have enough pick axes for them. Hmm. What can my other 4 guys do while 2 mine and one tries to fish?

I can't wait until I get back to St. Louis where I have a Windows box faster than an emulated one on my Powermac G4 to play this on.

God BLAST it, someone help me out here. What are the first couple of tasks I should perform after embarking? I'll write a nice, rich, funny review of this miserable excursion into blindness afterwards (maybe) I just need some help right now.

GOD all I want to do is play this freaking game, but it's almost 1:00am and sleep beckons. There's way too much good shit going on right now, in terms of entertainment. There's an overload.

My first Fort had no where to build farms, I'm going to generate a new one maybe.

The Porn? Check it out yourself: http://metachan.net/shibuyabashi/showthread.php?t=964 (NWS, duh)

by Ice Cream Jonsey » Mon Sep 04, 2006 11:26 pm

How was the porn? Because Dwar-- ah, it just finished building the world or something.

Diving in!

by Worm » Sat Sep 02, 2006 10:32 pm

Yeah, dwarf fortress. I mean, what else would I be talking about? The ascii intro movie won me over.

If you're wondering, the porn is "Black men ejaculate twenty consecutive times", it's Japanese, natch.

What is? Your copy of Dwarf Fortress? Your Internet connection? What, blast it, WHAT?

by Worm » Sat Sep 02, 2006 9:40 pm

This is gonna go on and off with Tekken 5 and Asian Porn this labor day.

Bwahahahaha.

No.

It's a Windows game.

It's a Windows game that's entirely "text", if by "text" we understand "Extended IBM ANSI Character set and lots of angry fruit salad colors."

I am impressed by the retroness, and also by some of the things I find on the site.

For instance, from the Bugs forum:
Some Guy wrote: lye bucket hoarding:

after my dudes make potash they seem to be hoarding the lye buckets in their workshops. the buckets still appear to have lye in them but i need to continually make more buckets for them to make more lye and potash
Or
Other Guy wrote: Possessed dwarf went insane after beginning construction:

My farmer was possessed, claimed a craftsdwarf workshop, began his mysterious construction, then went insane an hour after that. He never finished it. Is this ever supposed to happen?
Or "Butchering cats causes trouble" or "My well is bleeding".

Duuuuuude.

I have heard nothing but good things about this game. I wish they'd port it to my handheld already. Is there a Linux version?
