With some awkwardness yeah Worm: The Hard Drives are "locked", so you need to do something longwinded to replace it that involves putting it beside your computer so you can power the drive from your machine's pins while swapping the drives.

I don't think it's very complicated, maybe 5 minutes more than hacking a DS to play Maniac Mansion, but it does involve having to lift an Xbox.

So, if I could get an x-box cheap I basically could put an old standard IDE drive in it and play almost anything I wanted off that?

FTP into the xbox, and while you're there edit your dashboard menu file (are you using EvoX?) to give yourself a menu item to launch it.

How do I get the Xbox Media Center onto my Xbox, presuming I have a modchip and a DVD with XBMC on it? Does it install to the hard drive "automatically"?
