Space Empires IV is a rad space strategy game of the 4X (explore, expand, exploit, and exterminate) variety, like Civilization. The player acts as leader of an alien race in a bid to conquer the galaxy. This can be achieved in a number of ways, such as warfare, trading, diplomacy, or a combination of the above. It also has some of the most unintentionally hilarious character art I have ever seen:
The best part? For a limited time (gasp) until, I believe, January 4, you can get SE4 for
$8 on Steam. Space Empires V is also on sale, but it is rather more than $8 so fuck it.
Space Empires IV is moddable, from using the simple built-in map editor all the way to creating entirely new races. There are even mods available that change the built-in AI.
Space Empires IV can also be played over the Internet, either in real-time or over email. If we could get some games going then that would be awesome.
Be warned, however, that SE4 has a
hell of steep learning curve and it will probably take quite some time to grow accustomed to the way the game works. If you can penetrate the veil of whatthefuck shrouding the game, though, it's a fine 4X game.
