Well, in general, with other things, sure, maybe, but it didn't exactly break on it's own, ya know? Spending the extra money on a good camera case would have been a better idea.

when you get your new caqmera be sure to get that super extended warranty that seems like a foolish waste of money at the time. it's hindsight and everything but after NOT getting boned on a scanner it's convinced me.

$107 to repair. They are selling "refurbished" ones to people in my dilemma for $125. So you guys were right, ha. $107 to put a new fucking shutter button on it.

Oh, and when I submitted payment, there was a Java exception and their app crashed. Yeah, this'll do it for me and Canon for the rest of my life.

Yeah, I re-read your take and I understood that you were coming from a different angle. I went to edit my post and saw this reply. We're on the same table here. We're breaking bread. We've become fast friends. Hard, well-oiled friends.

I'm not what anyone would call righteous, just observing the manufacturing trends of the Western world. It IS possible to mass produce a quality, well made thing but the profit margin will always be less.

I agree with all of this. That being said, I am the dumbass who put the thing in the corner of a suitcase and most likely crammed it into an overhead bin on the plane. Canon's over to the side going, "See? See? It was that douchebag!" and that's fine. I take full responsibility.

Sure, by all means try and get it fixed. What I'm saying is that stuff is made to be disposable. Remind me to explain about my vacuum cleaner sometime.

Er... it was a $200 camera. It is absolutely wonderful in every way. I don't know about anyone else, but I have a serious issue outlaying the cash when shit breaks to just get a new one. I will, though, call Canon and see if it is possible get a replacement part.

But in all honesty, we're not likely to get an explanation as to why it's OK for you to shit upon every visitor that I've known previously, but not when it's someone you know.

And don't forget that saying, "I'm sorry!" is perfectly legitmate. You can try that as well. It might begin a new age around here, where we care about each other a little more.

It's the new industrial mentality. Never before have so many known so little about so much. That's sombodys quote, but I disremember who said it. I believe that stuff is being made so cheaply and quickly that replacement is actually preferable to repair. This is only true for the mass produced things. Custom mades and one-of-a-kinds are the exceptions. Unless you spend some serious money on stuff like that then it's almost guaranteed the item will have a limited lifetime.

In a somewhat related note, I have a No. 2 Kodak box Brownie. It's in great shape and would work fine if I could afford the film and processing. There's nothing that could go wrong with it that I couldn't fix with houshold tools. I guess they really don't build them like that anymore. Also have an X-15 which takes the 126 cartridges which are not made anymore. I am a victim of obsolescence.

I so wish I bought into this mentality! It woud be sooo easy. I think I'm going tomorrow to buy a $40 dollar film camera from K-Mart or the like and nobody has to deal with this 'tech' shit, that is supposed to make things so easy, but really only makes people complain, swear, and go insane. Fuck this. Every time someone ever bought me something new and trendy, it broke and nobody couild fix it, and my 14 year old thing ended up taking the place of it anyway. F this.

Case in point, our TV. It works. It works just fine. It is not , however, HD. Therefore it must go to the great island of misfit/obsolete toys while we get a newer, better one at great cost to our checkbook. Welcome to America.

I will update this thought train after Captian Morgan goes away.

(Edit: after a review of the camera in question I would use every means short of actually spending money to repair the device. If all attempts are unsucessful I would use the camera as a webcam and just get another, upgraded, camera.)

And it looks like the next best option is to call Canon directly and see if I can order one. This is actually not going as badly as I anticipated it going.

(In other news, have I successfully created the illusion that I want to have people here, but in reality don't? I like to try to accomplish that in every single thread and hopefully this one brings that home as well.)

Has anyone had the opportunity to experience the joy of fixing a camera? The button you press to snap off a picture on Dayna's Canon Powershot A610 came off. We did not notice that the button came off and it looks like it'd be something you could snap into place. I'm dying over here, trying to figure out how to get it repaired.

Locally, there is a place that says they will fix it for $156.00. The thing NEW would be $189 at this point. I mean, come on, how do they do this "one size fits all" repair mininum charge shit. Who would ever go this way?

I'm looking at Canon's site, but it doesn't load very well and is slightly cryptic. Have any of you guys been through this?
