Here's another one, and a story to go with it.

"Medic!" - Beach Head II

(The reason this is funny is because your little guy yells it after being blown apart and crumpling to the ground after being sprayed by a mounted machine gun.)

The speech done in Impossible Mission was done by a company called ESS Technology. ESS (Electronic Speech Systems) developed a proprietary method of compressing digitized speech for games. From what I've found, they offered their services to Epyx on Impossible Mission fairly inexpensively, and when people's jaws collectively dropped after hearing it, ESS raised their prices significantly.

According to Wikipedia, ESS speech was used in 10 games, including Impossible Mission, Ghostbusters ("He slimed me!") and Beach Head II. I hope Epyx got a discount with the speech used in Beach Head, because at least one of the samples (the one of a guy screaming) is the same one used in Impossible Mission when you fall off a platform.

According to Wikipedia, eventually the company migrated over to the world of PC Audio and sound cards, and still exists today. According to the same article, the technology used in the speech synthesis was licensed from the guy who developed the audio chips used in several pinball and arcade games, including Berzerk.

Ha, great story. My brother and I are coming to an impasse - it's been tense since I flipped my Civic and "ruined his football career"... and the situation has been coming to a head since then. We have one unresolved issue and the ball's in his court now. If he doesn't act before his birthday (oct 11th) I'm paying him a visit and sitting down with him, having a little man-to-man, heart-to-heart as his birthday present.

I hope the Genesis doesn't get knocked over!

My brother and I played a complete season of Madden 96 for the Sega Genesis. It would let multiple people control multiple teams. I was the Saints, and my brother was the Seahawks. This is before the re-alignment, so Seattle was still in the AFC. We were destined to meet in the Super Bowl.

I was playing the NFC Championship game (Mike had already secured his place in the SB) and my entire offense was heaving the ball to Michael Haynes. That was it. Haynes was a free agent pickup that the Saints, at that point, rarely made. He wasn't a particularly memorable player for ... well, anybody.

Except for my Madden 96 team! Anyway, my brother was half-asleep in the same room I was as I was finishing up the NFC Championship game. I think I had the game well in hand, but I was still throwing bombs to Haynes. Towards the end of the game I heard a "crack" and Pat Summerall say, "Oh no....!"

Well, this meant that Haynes was not going to play in the SB, and I would have absolutely no possibility of beating my brother, and it was gonna be a remote chance anyway.

"You can reset it if you like," my brother said. But I declined.

Mike was up about 40 points before halftime. We got into a fight because losing a football game to my brother is one of the few times in life that I can be set into a blind rage, and the Genesis was knocked over, resetting itself.

We then simmed the SB, and the Saints won in the sim by like 3 points. That made it extra-humiliating, because I had naturally assumed that Mike had a talent advantage as a gamer, and better players in Madden 96. Now only the former was absolutely true. :(

"Total Carnage!" - Smash TV

"BeeooWUHHHHH" - Robb's Asteroids machine

Probably something from Serious Sam.

I never noticed that there's a videogame named after me.

Huh, I bet it's complicated and difficult to understand.

That was also the last video-game releated thing to crack my dad up, with the exception of the time that I showed him the character he played in Fallacy of Dawn and told him that he was a "mean old bastard" in the game.

The 90s were a quiet time for video game jokes that made my dad crack up, is what I guess I am saying.

Hahah, that reminds me that the Angry Video Game Nerd pulled one out of those out of God-knows-where and hooked it up. The thing acquires this BIZZARE southern accent when it says "B-17 Bomber," which honestly -- we joke around a lot here, but honestly -- would have caused me to acquire an advanced form of intellivisionophobia if my parents hooked that damnable horror up for Christmas one year. Can you imagine?? Coming downstairs... new add-on for the Intellivision! Yaaaay! Yaaay! And then:

BEEEEEEE SEEEEVUUUUUUHNNNNN TEEEEEEN BOOooo-AHHH-AHhhHhAHHhhHAHH-MMMMM-br-br-br-br-br....brbr.....

Fuck that

I'll turn that into an article for the bloggy part of the site. Sorry, just been overwhelmed with work this week. I'll catch up tonight or tomorrow, I hope.

Yeah, that list is pretty lame. Off the top of my head, here are some that should have made the list:

"I'm sorry, but your Princess is in another castle." - Super Mario Bros.

"Skate or die!" - 720

"Shots do not hurt other players ... yet." - Gauntlet

"President Ronnie has been kidnapped by the ninjas. Are you a bad enough dude to rescue Ronnie?" - Bad Dudes

"Chicken, fight like a robot." - Berzerk

"@!#?@!". Q-Bert

"Another visitor. Stay a while. Stay forever!" - Impossible Mission

I'm sure I could come up with many more by doing about ten minutes of research (which seems to be about nine minutes more than Game Informer put into theirs, sheesh.)

by hygraed » Mon Dec 15, 2008 10:39 pm

Wait a minute, Berzerk had voice samples and it came out in 1980! A fool am I!

by hygraed » Mon Dec 15, 2008 10:37 pm

What about Space Spartans, B-17 Bomber, and Bomb Squad for the Intellivision? They were the launch titles for the Intellivoice, and unless I'm mistaken, are this the first games to have digitized voice. I think that should count for something.

AArdvark wrote:9] "War. War never changes." -- Narrator, Fallout
Uh, I loved Fallout, but geez.
7] "..." -- Hundreds of NPCs. Most Japanese RPGs to date
This is retarded. How can ellipses be a TOP line? What? Jesus Christ.
5] "Snake? Snake!? SNAAAAKE!" -- Metal gear Solid
I hate Metal Gear, but that always cracked me up.
4] "Killing spree!" -- Announcer, Unreal Tournament
M-M-M-M-Monster kill was better.

1] "Finish him!" --Announcer, Mortal Kombat
Close! The actual answer is "Get Over Here!"

What about: "Want some rye? 'course ya do."
I'll put that at number two... of my heart!

by AArdvark » Mon Dec 15, 2008 7:24 pm

yes, they can be quite young when it comes to video games. The overall consensus seems to be 'forget that there were video games before 1990'. Oh, they use some of them in the trivia page but they don't take them seriously. It must be an age thing.

That's the dumbest fucking list ever. Half of them mean nothing whatsoever outside of context, and the other half are played-out Internet memes. Where is Deus Ex? Max Payne? GTA: San Andreas? GameInformer is a joke.

Top 10 lines in video games

by AArdvark » Mon Dec 15, 2008 6:34 pm

This list is from the latest Gameinformer magazine. I do not agree with this list. It is here merely for your information

10] "You Rock!" -- Guitar Hero

9] "War. War never changes." -- Narrator, Fallout

8] "The cake is a lie." -- portal

7] "..." -- Hundreds of NPCs. Most Japanese RPGs to date

6] "Nuclear launch detected." -- Adjutant, StarCraft

5] "Snake? Snake!? SNAAAAKE!" -- Metal gear Solid

4] "Killing spree!" -- Announcer, Unreal Tournament

3] "Wizard needs food badly." -- Announcer, Gauntlet

2] "Would you kindly?" -- Atlas, Bioshock

1] "Finish him!" --Announcer, Mortal Kombat

There are blurbs explaining these picks in the magazine but some of these are waaaay too new to be in a top 10 list. Bioshock is only what, 18 months old? And it's number 2?

What about: "Want some rye? 'course ya do."
