The screen is 9.7" diagonal, which isn't quite 8 1/2 x 11, but it's close. I'm with you -- if I can read a standard PDF document on it, I'm sold. The one good thing is, I assume it has the standard multi-touch gestures, so you could zoom in if needed. But reading straight PDFs? Gold.

Is the new i-thingie large enough to display a document, say, 8-1/2 X 11? I want a display that can show a whole page in full size. Not that I would actually BUY an Apple product* but something the size of a clipboard would be good for me.

*it's just that Apple has yet to make something that I actually want to purchase. It's not the PC vs Apple thing here.
I'd buy a digital clipboard in a minute if it had a full tablet interface and was light and as powerful as my desktop.

FORWARD THINKING

I already posted some of these thoughts on another forum and on my blog as well but I might as well share them here too.

I have a Kindle and I am disappointed with some aspects of it. For example, I can't read anything on it in my living room when the lights are dimmed. True, I can't read a magazine either, but a magazine costs $5 and my Kindle was $400 so I was hoping for a little something extra. Also, the native PDF reader on the Kindle is a joke. It's like if you walked into a tire store and said, "gimmie the cheapest tire you got" and they bolted a triangle-shaped tire to your car. I've tried reading half a dozen PDFs on my Kindle and I can't make out the text on a single one of them. Why would you add a feature just to make my cry? It's worse than the mp3 player (which is horrible, by the way) because the PDF reader is something people really wanted. Having a crappy mp3 player on an e-book reader is like finding out that the cigarette lighter in your car doesn't work when you don't smoke. (What is it with me and bad analogies tonight. It's like a ... eh, nevermind.)

At first I had a hard time seeing the iPad replacing my Netbook because since it runs the iPhone OS, you're locked into their approved software. That means checking e-mail and surfing the web and stuff will be fine (you know, the things we were supposed to be doing with Netbooks) but anything "computery" like coding or playing PC games or running emulators looks to be out. That's a pretty big bummer right there. I know Apple likes to lock their shit down but imagine how cool it would be to play games on this thing -- not iPod games, but real ones.

I'm not disappointed by the lack of a camera, but the lack of a real GPS kind of blows. There are rumors that it'll have some sort of GPS detection but, eh, we'll see. With a GPS, yeah, I'd rip out my car stereo and mount this thing to the dash. Think about it -- movies, music, navigation and a touch screen for $499? I swear to God, it's the future.

I'm not crazy about the virtual keyboard. By all accounts, it's not great. I saw the add on keyboard but, even with that, I can't imagine pecking out a novel on this thing. Then again I bitch about the small keyboard on my Netbook all the time too so it's a tie.

I think it's a testament to Apple that I want one of these things and {A} I hate Apple and {B} I'm digging for uses at this point. At this very moment, and I wish I were kidding, I am within 20' of not only this laptop but 2 PCs, my Netbook, and my iPhone, all of which can do what the iPad does. The fact that I'm even considering buying one is amazing.

iPad, not just water absorption anymore

I am liking it. Yes, I am a gadget geek and think this thing offers me some decent shitastic enjoyment and couch surfing enjoyment.

The number one thing intriguing me is the games. I must say, I like the idea of playing these games on the device.

Expensive toy= Maybe, but the PSP has not wowed me in years, sold my DS after the 100th kiddie game release, and seeing some great companies realize the ease of use and instant satisfaction the app store offers the user is right up my gaming alley.

Could it have a camera, sure, but come on, when I am at home the thought of video chatting never gets my attention. I just don't enjoy having to put pants on and a shirt to video chat with babes all day.

multitasking argument is making me laugh. Why don't these journalist and pundits just admit it. Jailbreaks are for realsss dudes. It will do multitasking you freaks.

Now, I must admit, another reason for purchasing this is to get more value out of items I download from the app store. Yes, I think there are some great other tablets out there, but the fact I have spent money on the app store like it was monopoly money makes me want to get the tablet to actually have a few devices to make it worth while.

The only one I have serious impulse towards is the Lenovo Ideapad. We shall see what that does.

I seem to be more excited about the iPad than other people, and I'm not sure why. To me it seems like something out of the future, really. Imagine one of these mounted to the front of your fridge or the dash of your car.

I am considering dumping my netbook and my Kindle and picking one of these up.

I will eat the fruit

Ipad will be mine in 60 short days. I know, I could wait for a camera and all that jazz I never use, but why wait. The price is right and I am excited to see games on this unit.

A decent product I thinks!

I never would have thought Apple products would live in my home. Now I need a bigger tree and orchard.

I know, I fucking want that tablet. I'd pay a thousand bucks for it, if it could play all forms of text games.

Milker, if you get a chance, grab Q*bert and Run! for your iPhone. They are the two best games I've played for it. Run! is amazingly addictive.

We don't know what to put in it, or on it, or how we will use it, but I am excited about it. Thanks "Get Lamp" for the inspiration on my post.

So, the new Apple Tablet. Yeah, I must say I am excited to see what it can do and very curious to see the price point. I am excited to see what gaming might be like on the unit.

Having never been a huge fan of Apple upon getting my Iphone I guess I have drank the fruit juice.

My big question is if I have purchased a game on my Iphone, are they going to charge me twice to have it on the phone and the tablet?

Anyone have a picture with Jobs with a tablet? I will give you a coupon for a free Arby's sandwich.
