San Francisco (AP) More than fifty homes were destroyed and one hundred are still burning in a residential section of Northern California after a fire caused several explosions including one involving a gas main.
A small religious group in Palo Alto, a Marin County suburb in the Silicon Valley region, decided to try to usurp some of the publicity of a Florida Pastor's intent to stage a 'Burn a Koran' day on Saturday, the 9th Anniversary of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attcks, by holding their own 'Burn a Koran' event early.
The church group unfortunately chose to hold the Koran burning event in the parking lot shared with a gasoline station. The subsequent fire quickly spread to the underground tanks, causing them to burst and explode, triggering a subsequent explosion in a neighboring gas main that ruptured from the preceding fire.
Damages are expected to exceed $250 million.
