I'm sure you have more than you know what to do with.

Or as many people in your family still alive.

Will you just play a game and stop FIDDLING!

I dug up this thread because I just installed a 3k3y on my PS3 and was looking to continue the conversation. Then I saw who it was and got a little sad.

Jack, if you're up/down there and reading this... I got it working. The 3k3y works great and circumvents the need for CFW.

PSN is baaaaaaack....

with the 3.60 version spoofer. It's a .pkg and runs on kmeaw 3.55.

There's actually some good free music on the PSN store (the q-bert street fighter stuff)

I tellya they are gonna nuke all the firmware and make everybody start over. I was thinking of doing the custom thing but perhaps I will hold off until the PS4 comes out.

What great PR for a company touting their new handheld portable system.

"Buy our handheld and we promise to disable all the cool features remotely after you own it!"

Party's over already, at least for online. They pushed down 3.56, yet another update that adds NOTHING and only takes away.

To quote: "According to users on http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=420002 and http://www.highdefforum.com/gaming-syst ... ata-2.html Forum, the 3.56 firmware prevents the newer PlayStation 3 models (with 16 MB flash) from being upgradeable to a new hard disk drive.

want worms for 3.55? I have it as a .pkg file.

Untested but my "old" copy (and all other PSN games on 3.41) you need to say NO every time you start it to not update or it will tell you to go into the ps store and renew your license. Which means no online for worms or any of the psn games with update patches.

still a good game though, and you can play with as many people as you have controllers

I agree, it looks like MultiMan is the best option for me at the moment.

I can't find a list of games that contain files > 4GB anywhere. Maybe there's not one.

I acquired two games (Motostorm and Motostorm Pacific Rift) and they require 27 gig, so my original PS3 60 gig hard drive isn't going to get me very far if I have to run them all locally.

From what I am reading (and the files that are showing up) PSN games do work.

I meant to do the firmware today but instead I fell asleep after football was over. Maybe tomorrow.

I still haven't bumped over 3.41 so I'm not sure how it works on 3.55.

But in "the past" (just a few days ago) you had the choice of an external USB drive of some sort formatted to fat32 or using the internal drive. Fat32 has that 4gb file limitation.

I hear PSN works on the 3.55 cfw's? Tempting, but I'm using hermes 3.41 cfw for now simply because I had a 500gb set up internal and I didn't want to break shit.

I don't think blackbox ftp works on 3.55 yet? You can use the FTP programs built into your backup manager (multiman is probably your best bet for 3.55)

My, things are a'changin' ...

I'm going to try to put on a custom FW this weekend. I upgraded to 3.55, which appears to be step one. I acquired a couple of, uh, "test programs" in anticipation. Can these be run from an external USB drive, or do they all have to be FTP'ed over to the PS3?

I found the important ones, 3.41 and 3.15. It would be useful to have 3.5 and 2.76 as well

Don't mess with the brown ACID "CFW". It can hardly be called a custom firmware, and although it can be permanently installed on the system, it doesn't afford much usability for the common warez rat. And made me look dumb telling the kid he didn't need a modchip; I'd just install acid cfw permanently. DERP!

Also, I downgraded a slim 160g from 3.4 to 3.15 with no issues; kept Blu-ray playback just fine.
No otheros though.. doing some research it looks like the slims never had otheros because the lowest they shipped with was 3.2. Wishful thinking I suppose..

I know I can downgrade at this point, and would like to freely go up and down from 3.15 to 3.5, 3.41 for various uses IF I could be comfortable that when I go back to 3.15 I'll still have my preccciiioooouuussss linuxxxx......

Or they can just come with the REAL custom firmware, already.

Is there a list of what games install what firmwares? (I suppose Google could answer that just as easily; strike that, I'll go look.)

by Guest » Mon Dec 13, 2010 9:34 am

As fas as I have seen, there are no 3.5 jailbreaks in the wild.

What there IS right now is a downgrade for 3.5. I did it successfully on a guy from work over the weekend, took it from 3.5 back to 3.41. I didn't have to format the hard drive, but did lose blu-ray playback. (those are the 2 risks of doing the downgrade, having to format the hdd and having blu-ray playback disabled)

Whatever you do, don't update to 3.55. It's a strict security update and does not add any features, only removes them.

Also Sony pulled all pre-3.55 firmware updates from their servers so unless they're mirrored somewhere on the internet you need to pull them off of discs. I'm still looking for a US 3.01 or 3.15 so I can test and see if downgrading from 3.5 allows you back into linux.

I think I will upgrade to 3.50 now before Sony releases another new one.

Linux on XBox

by Tdarcos » Wed Dec 01, 2010 3:58 pm

The older version of XBox had a bug that if you used a hacked savegame with a particular game - I think it was a James Bond 007 game - it would allow you to install and run arbitrary unsigned code; the "arbitrary unsigned code" being the Linux Operating System.

The patch allowed you to insert it into the dashboard and boot Linux, it meant that for technical reasons you could not use a feature, I think it was XBox live, and was fully reversible so you could back out to the way it was.

So this gave people the capacity to run Linux and Linux-based applications on Xbox.

There were lots of complaints about Microsoft being unable to fix various problems in the XBox when customers complained about them, but when this "bug" showed up, Microsoft moved with all deliberate speed to fix it.

When the customers are screwed over, it's like pulling teeth to get things fixed, but when the company screws itself over to the benefit of the customer or the customer figures a way to screw over the company, then you see them act with lighting speed to fix it.

And Iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii ... am hooked on a feeling!

(Do do DO doooooooooo)

by Ice Cream Jonsey » Sun Nov 28, 2010 11:34 pm

I think Sony owes you a few free games if they're going to pull Linux support from their machine. This isn't based on facts or whatever, it's just a feeling.

So if I buy GT5, will it automatically upgrade my PS3?

I've always hated the idea of having to own two of the same console (one to pirate games on) but I may end up doing that for the PS3.
