I think you did exactly what Flack would have done. You can't let 'em know up front that you're interested in the stuff -- otherwise management will catch on and they'll start some "selling old crap to employees" program. You did the right thing; turn your nose up at it as it goes by, excuse yourself, and then run out and dig around in the trash when nobody's looking! ;)
My problem is, I save things "because somebody else need them", but nobody ever does. I probably would have been out there prying floppy drives and CMOS batteries out of that 386 for somebody who could use them.
