Going through both that site and Abandonia reminded me how many games I've talked about that I've never played. I'd like to find the time to correct that.

This project lives! This project lives....

BCW has always been one of my favorites for the C64, mainly because of the German computer voice. Plus the suitcase bomb graphic on the load screen was kinda cool. I too am going to download it and see if it still holds up.

I think I sent you that manual, or instruction pamphlet, or folded sheet of paper with bad printing on both sides.

The Beyond Castle Wolfenstein Project

While browsing oldskool.org, I found this little item:

It's a project to "convert the original PC booter to a DOS/Windows executable."

I've never really told anyone this before, but my great-grandfather was killed in the Holocaust. The holocaust... that was the dearth of great PC games growing up. It almost took me as well.

Castle Wolfenstein was always one of the games we could point to and enjoy. I know it was available on the Apple II, the one computer that had less graphical ability than the PC. I assume it wasn't ever available for the Atari 800, because if it was, I'd have put it on my Flash cart.

I don't recall the plot of Beyond Castle Wolfenstein, but apparently it involves our soldier back in the castle which, when you think about it, sort of spoils the ending to Castle Wolfenstein. ("They catch him and put him back inside, with no consequences for spree-killing like 80 German guards during the original escape attempt.")

But there you go. I'm going to download it and give it a shot.
