Either the person who told me had it wrong or I misunderstood them, but I'm being discharged tomorrow, Thursday, June 25, not Friday June 26. This was unfortunate because I had scheduled a trip by Metro Access for Friday, and they require the trip be booked at least 1 day in advance. I don't get told this until like 6:00 this evening; Metro Access accepts change orders and new trip bookings until 4:30. Dammit, if someone had given me the correct date by 4 or so I could have made correct arrangements. I also can't call for a wheelchair accessible cab because they also require 1 day advance notice.
All is not lost, however. About 3 blocks away is a Ride-On stop where I can catch the #5 bus to Silver Spring. (It also runs in the opposite direction to Twinbrook Station and passes by Micro Center, one of the best computer store chains in the country.)
At Silver Spring I can either catch a bus or train which can take me home. While I was gone the landlord replaced my mattress (it has been on the bed for 5 1/2 years) and I had already bought a full six-sided mattress cover (the old one needed replacing too) and I have a sheet set to put on it. I bought it in black, I liked the look.
In view of this problem, the doctor was going to extend my stay for one day but I decided to take the departure tomorrow. He was concerned about how I would get home, and I explained that buses and trains are wheelchair accessible. Buses with steps have a lift that comes down, all other buses have a ramp that flips out. Buses have reserved seating for wheelchairs. I said it's because of two things: (1) The Americans With Disabilities Act (of 1990) requires public transit operators to provide reasonable accommodation to persons with disabilities, and (2) UMTA, the federal agency that provides grants to transit agencies, will pay for it.
I said that he must never have ridden a bus, and he admitted it's probably been 10 years.
I've been chomping at the bit to get the fuck out of here, and if it's possible for me to escape earlier than I could I'll take it.
As with a long line of people who see me and just see a fat guy in a wheelchair, my capacity to fend for myself was underestimated.
