Top Three Things Flack Learned From Pinback

One of the three things I've learned from Pinback is that "best of" lists over 10 items are fairly pointless. You can reasonably sort lists of favorite things out to about ten; after that, it's just a collection of stuff you like. That's not to say they aren't fun to make (I thoroughly enjoying putting this one together and sharing it with everyone) but at the end of the day it's pretty rough to argue some of the ordering. After the top 10, I probably like songs #11-#50 about the same.

Good list, Flack. Awesome to see Slither, Soul Sucking Jerk, and other random stuff.

This sort of things always make me think “well this song sucks but other songs that band did and other stuff in this list are cool”.

Perhaps we should narrow things down a bit like.. “Top 10 The Cure songs” in a new thread. Every time I think about rating all my music I’m overwhelmed.

Just spent the past two days going back through this list.

I think this is a band ICJ would like and Pinback would hate almost as much as he hates this list. I took a date to see this band live in a club once. I was singing along so loudly that I ended up on stage and sang the chorus of this song. Then I shouted “HERE WE GO!” and dove off the stage and landed on my date. Nearly killed her. April was the season, but it also was her name.

This is a song about a serial killer who is doing the city a service by killing prostitutes and keeping the city clean. When I saw Alice Cooper live, not only did he not play this song, he didn’t play anything from this album (“Raise Your Fist and Yell”). I have loved this song for 30 years. Cooper gets bonus points for working in the phrase “modus operandi.”

80. Cake - War Pigs

I have this weird memory of learning about Cake and Fun Luvin' Criminals and Beck and Dog Fashion Disco all during the same summer. Maybe it wasn't but for some reason all of those bands are grouped together in my brain.

I'm sure I learned about Cake from their single "The Distance," but I didn't fall in love with the band until I picked up their "B-Sides and Rarities" album.

Along with cover versions of "Ruby, Don't Take Your Love to Town", "Mahna, Mahna", and "Strangers in the Night", we get this creative cover of the classic Black Sabbath track, complete with a funky bass line and a horn section. It's a crazy, kooky version of the song, and it makes me smile every time my phone dishes it up.

81. Green Day - Brain Stew

I wasn't a particularly early Green Day fan -- I discovered them with Dookie like the rest of America. It's funny how "punk" those early tracks used to sound and how "normal" they sound today.

I'm a sucker for a good staccato guitar riff with a tight gate, and this one certainly qualifies. I'm on my own, here we go. When this song comes on, the volume goes to 11.

82. My Life with the Thrill Kill Kult - Kooler than Jesus

I honestly can't remember when I discovered MLWTTKK -- sometime before Sexplosion! was released and "Sex on Wheelz" appeared on the Cool World soundtrack, so probably 1990 or so. The first time I heard "Kooler than Jesus" I felt the same way I did after I heard Motley Crue's "Shout at the Devil" -- that was was bound to go to hell over music. Why must everything so good be so bad for us?

There are a lot of great songs on those first couple of songs like "Devil Bunnies" and "The Devil Does Drugs." It's also where I learned what a Daisy Chain 4 Satan was. But if you're gonna jump in, jump in here.

83. Heart - Barracuda

I discovered Heart in the mid-80s when they were releasing songs like "These Dreams" and "Alone". At some point I bought the Heart greatest hits and discovered some of their older songs. I'm sure I had heard "Barracuda" on the radio before that, but I'm not sure that I knew that it was Heart.

I have never been able to master all the nuances of this song on the guitar but I play it like a madman on the air guitar.
