For the first time in history, the new Emergency Alert System, which replaced the cold war-era Emergency Broadcast System, will have a national test message. This means that all television, radio, and cable-carried channels in the country will be interrupted for a test message of the EAS.
The first National EAS test message will occur at 17:00 GMT, or 2 PM Eastern, 1 PM Central, Noon Mountain and 11 AM Pacific standard times, on November 9, 2011.
Previously, all EAS messages were either weekly or monthly tests done by each individual station, cable system, or state authority. This will be the first EAS test to be operated on a national basis, on every station in the country.
