Ultima 9: It lives... again!

I got wind of this site today:

http://www.fansforultima.com/indexu9.htm

When Ultima 9 was released it apparently crashed all the time and completely ignored the 8 games that came before it. EA told Origin to get it out by Thanksgiving or else they were going to drop it like a green bag of crap. I received it as a gift that Christmas and played it long enough to become completely uninterested (and I think that Ultima 7, 6 and 3 were all fantastic games).

At the Fans for Ultima.com site there are a few unofficial patches for the game. An economy & monster patch as well as a dialogue patch. It looks rather intriguing, but brings up an interesting question -- having never played the game, should I burrow through what Origin released, or give the user patches a try? I think I'm going to do the latter, after all, what was included by design in the box is, from everything I've read, not that thrilling. The downside is that my U9 experiences will apparently be completely incompatible with anyone else's (at least, anyone who played it straight).

I'm flying home for the weekend so I won't be able to tackle this until I get back (and after I install FS2002, natch) but this was kind of intriguing, seeing how we've previously seen numerous mods and skins written for games, but I can't really recall fans going to town on a game's design like this before.
