Why do you despise him so??

I think I solved the spam issue. RWS is the last guy to register, so that will be a good way to check. If only legitimate people register after him then we are golden.

You really have to use multiple tactics with phpBB. I have their own CAPCHA (sp? captcha? whatever) system in place, and spammers apparently have a program that breaks it. Amazing. But not all of them do, so you have to leave it in. The amount of effort is stunning. You can say that they just click a button, but come on - someone is typing in those ridiculous names, someone is setting up the scripts to begin with, someone is ultimately putting together the websites that those asshole so desperately want to improve the pagerank of.

People say, "if it didn't work and they didn't make money, they wouldn't do it." I honestly don't believe that's the case. I think they are all a little touched.

And no other phpBB site tests for that, so that's even more reason to try it.
That sounds like a rational and needed policy.

This place is starting to look like the MoltoBenny BBS. What can be done to prevent a similar case of death by spam?

That looked more like a human posting rather than a spambot. How do you protect against human spammers?

Yeah, it's good they start topics, but I really need to get a better captcha in there.
