Internal drive converter

by Tdarcos » Sun Mar 13, 2011 4:04 pm

Micro Center sells an internal drive converter for a mere $14. It includes a plug and power supply with SATA and PATA (IDE) connectors, and a box about the size of two packs of chewing gum that has 3 1/2" PATA (desktop) and 2 1/2" PATA (laptop) hard drive connectors on the opposing sides, and a SATA cable connector on the third side. The fourth side is a USB connector.

Nice little gizmo as it allows you to turn any SATA or PATA internal drive into a USB external. So you can use it to hook up a device that doesn't support that device (SATA drive on IDE-only machine) as long as the computer can support an external USB drive. So it's great for the geek who always has hard drives sitting on his desk, you can test or work with them without having to crack a box to do so.

For those that like a neat or permanent solution you can buy an IDE or SATA external enclosure that sits on your desk and you can put the device in that. For those that like being able to use an internal drive - hard drive, CD or DVD - basically on-the-fly at any time, this is a really great quick gadget.

I had pulled a 20 GB drive out of a computer because I discovered I had just stuffed it in there, it wasn't even hooked up, it just sat on the bottom of the case. Plugged it into the converter on my new computer - which doesn't have IDE connectors so I couldn't have used it - and it looked like, for all intents and purposes, a 20 GB jump drive.

My next step is to try plugging my new SATA Blu-Ray drive WRITER and try it before shutting down my computer to replace the DVD writer currently installed. (Yes, I did buy the Blu-Ray; Micro Center had a normally $139 OEM drive marked down to $109.)
