There is a company called Sakar - they're in New Jersey - that supposedly makes rechargeable batteries. Well, as far as I'm concerned that name is appropriate, because basically, you're a sucker if you buy them.
They had a really great price, like $5 for a pack of four AAA rechargables, so I bought $20 worth. As will almost all NIMH rechargeables you have to charge them first. Which isn't a problem, I own two battery chargers.
The problem is either they don't charge or they fail to hold a charge or they falsely indicate they've charged. I opened two packs, and neither works, or, at best, they'll work about 1 minute in my digital camera then fail for 'battery low'. Starting up gets about one minute then die again.
Remove existing batteries which are okay, of which I have Phillips, Ray-O-Vac, Energizer, and maybe one or two other well-known manufacturers, all of these brands of AAA NIMH rechargeables work fine. But these Suck-ars won't. Put previous batteries back in, camera resumes operation. I've never had a problem with any of the other brands.
Well, I was going to mail them back, but first I called the 800 number for customer service. From the accent of the agent it probably terminated in India. The company is going to send me one of their battery chargers. So I'll see what happens. At least for the moment it's saved me about $2 in postage stamps.
I have about 10 batteries currently, which, since the camera uses 3 at a time, gives me one set installed and 2 reloads. The extra packs would have given me 5 more reloads.
Well, anyway, the other day I was in Target and bought a package of 4 Duracell pre-charged AAA NIMH rechargeables for $10.99 as they are advertised as holding a charge between uses up to a year, which sounds fantastic; typically the batteries I use will hold a charge about a month. I currently have them in the camera and they seem to work longer than others. Most times I'll get one shooting set up, say 1/2 hour to 45 minutes of run time before the camera runs out of power on the current load. These have done at least two shoots and still appear to have plenty of power.
If these Duracells do as well as they seem and the Sakars turn out to be crap, I'm going to buy some more of them. (The Duracells, not the Sakars, of course!)
Well, anyway, we'll see how the suckers err I mean Sakars work once I get their charger. If this doesn't work I'll mail the batteries back asking for 5 new packs to replace them. (I should get something for the inconvenience.) Then if I have to send them back a second time, I will insist on a refund of $6 each (so I can buy decent Duracell rechargeable batteries instead of these counterfeit ones from Sakar.)
