I don't know what you're thinking of for a setting, but in a Star Trek like environment, I think a hand-held teleporter device would make a teleportation system more interesting and believable. Being able to just beam almost anywhere is too unlimited; if people have to be holding a teleporation device to get "beamed", that would put a reasonable limitation that could aid storytelling and the setting. Maybe like the "thumb" in Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

Given that Valve seems pretty cool with Portal "remakes" done in Flash and stuff like that, a well-done IF homage to Portal would probably be pretty cool. That said, assuming your game takes place in your own game world, having a mechanic that recalls Portal like that is probably a bad idea.

I'm thinking of doing another short game, and I'd like a suggestion. Which would be a better idea, an implementation of a hand-held teleporter, or something more interesting, an implementation of something like the Portal gun? Fire it in a room, it activates a portal (which is not yet open), go to someplace else, fire it again and it creates an open Portal to the other room (and that room now has a portal to this one.)
