What have you learned from Jolt Country?

Post by pinback »

With such a diverse group of fascinating people here, anyone who spends any length of time here is sure to come away greater than they walked in.

In your time here, what is the one thing you have learned above all else, that you've been able to take away from this little long-running online experiment and say, "Jolt Country taught me that"?
Am I a hero? I really can't say. But, yes.

I have enjoyed the recipes that you have sent over the years. It has helped my cooking, which I do more of now that I am working from home.

I have learned that people can be nicer than I could imagine. I have learned I can be talked into doing videos I have no interest in, and in at least one case (crepes) I can be bribed into doing a video.

And again, I am ashamed and disgusted. Not because I was bribed; anyone not up to the wealth of Bill Gates, Carlos Slim or Jeff Bezos can be bribed. No, I was ashamed and disgusted I could be bribed so cheaply!

Not true. You learned that you learned nothing. And now, thanks to me, you have learned that you learned that you learned nothing.

One of the things I have learned from this site is that any topic will become political in ten replies or less, and then out of nowhere Tdarcos will comment on it six months later.

I have learned people visit internet forums for a myriad of reasons. Some people use them for friendly conversation. Some people use them to blow off steam. Some people use them to share or obtain news. Some people use them to troll others. Some people see them as an extension of real life. Some people see them as an escape from real life. There are the bullies and the bullied, the straight men and the comedians, the rule followers and the anarchists, the intellectuals and the insane. And as much as these groups hate one another, they also need one another. Who would the troll harass if nobody shared their opinion? Who could post stinging one-liners if people in need of positive reinforcement shared nothing? Around and around it goes, with the occasional slab of fresh meat wandering in, and old beaten cows wandering out to pasture. If you're lucky you'll make a friend or two along the way, and if you're not, well, hopefully you went down swingin'.

I don't think there are enough people here for you to have learned all that.

He said "internet forums" i.e. plural. I'm sure he's either been on, or currently participates in discussions on, other sites. I do so myself.

Well, that's not the question we're answering here, is it, Paul? What do those big letters up at the top of the thread say?
