Sensible World of Soccer '96/97 (Amiga, 1996)

(Played on an Analogue Pocket.)

SWOS was probably the biggest hole in my experience as a video game player. I had heard its praises sung forever, but for whatever reason I'd never been able to get it to work on my real Amiga or an emulator.

With the addition of AmigaVision to my Pocket, it was easy to get it going - no futzing around with KICKSTART.ROM and disk swapping and all the other stuff that prevented the Amiga from being as easy to use in 2024 was a SNES or Genesis.

And I am happy to say that SWOS lives up to the hype. It's brilliant. The graphics weren't retro at the time, but they are perfect where we are now. I think I may only know one dude in this game - Alexei Lalas, for the USA - and although they don't have many pixels to work with, I can recognize that it's him on the starting lineup screen and in the game.

(Man, I gotta clean that thing.)

The game is crazy fast, and it's all controlled with one button. There seem to be a zillion teams across all continents and clubs to pick from. I don't know a lot about how international soccer is structured, but there certainly seems like are options for league play. (The "friendly" match is what I have been doing.)

I am not going to do justice to the thing as it's been the #1 game for the Amiga in forever, and plenty of words have been written I think. It is impressive just how much content is in here.

Oh man, so many memories with this game. I was playing it with friends on an old piece of shit TV for hours on end. We'd only stop at dawn when we couldn't keep our eyes open anymore. The single player is nice, but two players going against each other was epic.
