[Rampant Software Advocacy] NoLimits

Post by pinback »

(WARNING: Nobody cared about this the first time, three years ago, and nobody will care about it now.)

So, I've been out of the coaster game (both riding and designing) for at least a year and a half now, having perhaps burned out a tad on the whole thing, and plus, aren't I getting a little bit old for that sort of thing?

Anyhow, I seemed to have found myself with a month or six free and nothing to do, so I decided yesterday to get back up to speed on NoLimits, which at the time was the very best coaster simulator on the market, by a fairly wide margin. Since I'd been around, a major new update had been released, including such goodies as wooden coasters (*finally*), automating support generation, terraforming, and a whole slew of other bells, whistles, and toys.

And today, I spent the entire day using it. And any time I spend an entire day using a single piece of software, I think it deserves getting its name up in lights.

NoLimits is an extraordinary program in every respect. One half is the editor, which provides you every tool you could ever think of to design a track (and more that you wouldn't have thought of), and while getting the track just right is occasionally an exercise in aggravation, this is the price that you pay for ultimate flexibility. The other half in the simulator, which turns your creation into pretty 3D and lets you ride and watch and press the buttons on the ride operator's station. The attention to detail in this simulator is astonishing. Everything is modeled, right down to the upstop wheels on each car, underneath the track, the fin brakes, the safety systems... everything. YOU WILL BELIEVE A MAN CAN RIDE ON A ROLLER COASTER.

Anyway, if a lazy, moronic douchebag such as myself can, in just a few short (edit: VERY LONG) hours can create something like the ride shown below (which has to be ridden to be believed), then you know you are dealing with one hell of a gem of a program.

I do care, pathetically enough.

I have a question, and I'm sure it's the one on everybody's mind:

Can you design BAD COASTERS? That is, can I make a Coaster To Nowhere, or a Coaster To A Brick Wall, or one that intentionally banks and dumps the cars off into the lake?

If so, is the ensuing carnage animated in horrific loving detail? Are there passengers? Do their limbs get severed in ray-traced gouts of spraying arterial blood?

You can't design coasters that cause violence, Rollercoaster Tycoon-style, no. The train will always stay on the track, and currently the simulator will not operate unless the track is a complete circuit.

However, G forces are reported continuously in the simulator, and if you don't keep them within reasonable limits (+4/-1 vert, +1.5/-1/5 lat), then people will laugh at you and belittle you if you ever upload the coaster to a public repository.

Believe me, it's much, much harder to make a good one than a bad one.

Bummer.

Is there a Nauseator Factor like there is in RCT? Because I really think my little sim amusees haven't had a good time unless they PUKE.

As there are no passengers in NoLimits (other than yourself, when you're in "onboard" mode), there is no built-in nausea statistic.

However, my old classic NoLimits coaster, "Joust", has been reported to make actual humans feel a bit queasy after having "ridden" it.

The point here is, it's far less "game" and far more "simulator/design tool". Actual ride designers are now starting to use it for their own professional, profitable purposes.

I would have to say: Some.

Anyway, for those of you with the full retail version of NoLimits, which is of course none of you, you can download the final version of my latest coaster, Idyllica, at:

Thanks. Have a nice day.
