The Textbook Scam

Post by Ice Cream Jonsey »

I'll spare you the arguments you've read a thousand times. I just want this on record.

The book for the CSC 240 Java Programming class I'm taking... $92 new. NINETY TWO FUCKING DOLLARS. Is there anything on the net that has more documentation than Java? I mean, anything, including even reality TV. Anyone who couldn't find enough free information to teach themselves Java will never get it anyway (I need the official credit).

If a text on particle physics or heavy atoms or unstable molecules needs to go for a hundred bucks then fine, whatever, there is less than 1% of the populace that can even spell molecule much less learn about them. But Christ, the goddamn nerve to ask that much for the most documented programming language in the history of the planet.

I bought it from Half.com or Used.com or Amazon.com or JumpMyButt.com or one of a million other stores for around $50, but that's still $40 too much. My BROTHER knows some Java for the love of Christ. Anything he is good at should not cost $50 to experience.

The best part is that when the class is done, you'll amble down to the campus textbook store so you can sell the book back to them. They'll offer you $6 for your $92 book because "we're not using that book next semester".

Download the book and read it off yor palm pilot,.That's what I'd do.

The last textbook I needed to purchase was CNC programming (something or other, it's at work collecting dust now)

$36 bucks. Balls! And then a year later I see the same book in someone's trash down the street. Weird.

But the important thing is - did everyone get how I wrote "The Textbook Scam" and then it was ABOUT text books. I mean, this was not lost on everyone, right? Imagine I am unconfident comic Hal Sparks. Ready? Ready? EVERYONE GOT THAT RIGHT?!?!?! RIGHT?
