Pretty bad Windows exploit
There is a pretty bad Windows exploit that you can get on any page, browsing the Internet. Long story short, you probably want to run this until it is patched:
run regsvr32 /u shimgvw.dll
I'll see if I can dig up more info. Firefox does NOT help, and for God's sake don't go to Google Image Search in the meantime.

So, Microsoft put out a patch for this. A question was raised in a different forum as to whether or not a W98 patch would be released.
Some stupid fuck named "Nimion" who works for Microsoft writes the following:
What this stupid maggot doesn't understand is that tons of people bought Windows 98 in good faith for for the love of Christ, don't deserve an operating system that won't forever be susceptible to the worst exploit in history.
I use a W98 machine for one purpose -- ending a season in FPS: Football 98 crashes in XP. I need to copy over my league files to my W98 box, sim the last game and then copy them back over. Nice to know that I can now NEVER have the Internet on that machine.
Jesus fuck, Microsoft is the most incompetent company of the information age.

Un-fucking believable. You should have NO REASON to be running 98!!!! None!!!No, we did not release a patch for Windows 98/ME, and it doesn't look like we have plans to either. Windows 98/ME has been officially unsupported for a while now, though it's not unheard for us to release patches for it. If I hear anything about a 98/ME patch for this, I'll post here about it.
Oh, and as the poster above me said, upgrade your OS man! Seriously, there is no reason you should be using anything below Windows 2000 at this point.

Like a crush!
I think he has a crush on Bill Gates and has not admitted it yet. I think he is greatly upset about this exploit as he can no longer look at porn images doing google image searches. You know ones of Bill naked on that bulldozer he stole years ago.

Update: the nobody posting to that thread had no idea W98 was still officially supported by Microsoft, and he works at Microsoft. It really helps you understand how exploits like this get out with the great people they working on this shit.
Steve Gibson stated he'd make a W98 patch anyway, should Microsoft fail to. Thank Christ.

Cut Microsoft a break. Windows 98 has been out for more than 6 years, after which they've come out with three (and soon four) different OSs, and I'm not counting service packs or "XP home" VS. "XP professional" VS. "XP 64-bit media editiopn explode!" Hell, i'm not even counting 98 second edition. For a company to continue supporting a product that long is actually kind of remarkable. Hell, I give bonus points for Microsoft actually continuing to support Milenium as opposed to doing what any sane person would do and drop it like a ton of bricks and give people discounts on upgrading to a better OS, like DOS 5.0.

No. The reason they dominated was because their software was backwards compatible. If you want to know why Apple has 2.3% of the home computer market, well, that's your reason right there. In the old days that completely turned people off to your platform.Lysander wrote:Cut Microsoft a break. Now, because the future is always shittier than the past, Microsoft is pulling the same shit. And I don't even care, but when there hasn't been a good football game released since 1998 and the company that made the game went under and the company that made the OS doesn't give a shit then where do you go from there? There's an easy solution, of course -- someone could MAKE A GOOD FUCKING FOOTBALL GAME.
But nobody has. Nobody, probably, ever will.

Software is not backwards compatible. XP never has been backwards compatible with 98. Getting the same program to run on 98 and XP is a never-ending source of pain for most developers. Maybe it jsut looks that way though because of how many OSes microsoft has come out with (not quote 10 if you're feeling liberal) versus all the ones Apple's made (2.)

You are 100%, totally and completely incorrect about what you just said. If you think that Apple has only released 2 operating systems in all the time they've been a company then this has to be the most clever troll you've ever produced. You should win an award for this one. Especially since I fell for it.
