Playstation 2
Okay, I picked one up today. What games should I be playing? I'm going to get ICO as I've heard a lot of good things about it but I'm wondering what else I should be trying.
On an unrelated note, Robb, I'm now reading "When Gravity Fails." I've had the latter two books in the series for years and years now as I picked them up in used book stores in the hopes of reading the series but never found the first one until I just recently gave in and ordered it from a place online.
So I'll probably be replaying Circuit's Edge some time... When does that take place, between the first and second book?

I always thought of it as sort of an alternate-reality; going on at the same time, in different situations. I am probably wrong.
If you're into seriosuly deep story type-stuff, I'd recomment Soul Reaver 2: Legacy of Kain. Unless you've played the other Kain games (or atleast the first Soul Reaver) you'll have no idea what's going on; it's one of those mega-deep story deals where every ten minutes you have to decide what the meaning of life is.
So scratch that, play the first one on Dreamcast / PSOne first.
Heheheh. Phruitcake got the shift-glyph, which denotes the ability to shift between planes of existence, tattooed to his upper arm. I'm am absolutley *positive* he has tried at least once to shift into the Shadow Realm using this. He's that kind of guy.

WHOOA!
Heyo, I say you should try AC2, AC3, A Dynasty Warriors Game, Kengo, Kengo 2 (If it comes out), I'd much rather suggest Playstation games that play super swank on the PS2.
Rising Zan (Just such a great game), AC1, Bushido Blade 1&2 look great if you change the graphics to smooth.
Oh, oh, Gradius III&IV and That new Contra game.

Re: Playstation 2
When I bought my PS2, I picked up Spy Hunter and Maximo along with Ico. Spy Hunter is rather shallow. I don't want to say that they fucked it up, but the thing about that game is the constant upgrade of weapons through the weapon ran, to go along with the Peter Gunn theme song. The weapons van is there, but the game is so mission-based that maybe you see it once if you see it at all (at least on the early levels). Definitely a disappointment.Roody_Yogurt wrote:Okay, I picked one up today. What games should I be playing? Maximo is without question the hardest game I have ever played. It doesn't help things that the designers just had to get cute with the saving process, and then couldn't even get the game's manual to reflect upon what you need to go through. I got sick of having to play the same area over and over again because I'd either die before I could get to a place where I could save, or (the last time I played it) I saved with exactly one life left, and I have no idea how to get more. Maximo is a solid game which is completely ruined by the infantile and completely fucking retarded save process.
That leaves Ico. Ico is great, I have no problems with it and it's probably one of the best games I've ever played.
My brother bought NFL2K3 and NBA2K3. The football game is solid, except that for whatever reason they added something this year where the QB will throw the ball where the receiver is *supposed* to be. Fair enough in single player mode, but when you have a bunch of guys over and people take control of the receivers you'd better run the route. God forbid you see an opening. Sega has some crappy "Maximum Passing" mode to get around this, but it requires you move with one analog pad and throw with the other. It didn't work in John Elway's Quarterback for the PC 15 years ago, and it doesn't work now. But that's a (relatively) minor quibble. Other than that, it's excellent.
I played about ten minutes of NBA2K3. I think Mike likes it. He's been playing it every night for two straight weeks now. I'll see if I can get him to chime in with his take on it.
Other than those five games, I haven't played anything. I am looking for other games to pickup, so if anyone else has something to recommend, definitely clue us in.

FANTASTIC. When Gravity Fails is by far my favorite book, and Marid my favorite character in all of fiction.
Yeah, the Circuit's Edge takes place between book #1 and #2. That's a pretty solid game in its own right, using the human mod chips as a gameplay advancement and all.
Peace be upon you, Roody. (If you get into the books like I do, you can't help but pick up Arabic sayings. If you don't, this just means that you are sane.)

I was just playing the first Soul Reaver for the first time on my Dreamcast last night, ironically. It seems cool (throwing people to be impaled on things is the best) but I really have no idea what the game has to do with the 'blood omen: legacy of kain' (is that what it was called?) game for PS.
Robb, I'm 151 pages into it and having fun. Of course, "Fallacy of Dawn" obviously paid homage to Circuit's Edge (which I would have caught, I'm sure, even if it hadn't been pointed out at some point), but it's interesting to see how it also reflects into your writing, and to some degree, even into your online persona and world view (or maybe it already represented you pretty well even before you read it). I need to find me a book like that to kickstart some good shit.
And as enjoyable as the Arabic saying stuff is, I'm sure I'll never say anything, but it is fun to read two guys exchanging shitloads of pleasantries when it is basically known that one of them may kill the other once they get to business.

Alright, finished. Well, that was interesting. I kind of liked the remembering this character or that from the game, but at least one guy that I thought I remembered from the game doesn't live that long.
Enjoyable read, but now I'm going to be looking forward to finishing replaying 'circuit's edge' just to get back to the books, because I don't remember much character-relationship development in the game and someone who knows how 'when gravity fails' ends probably knows why I'm curious.

This is definitely true. Effinger was a god to me, and I read that book right at the age boys read books at that tend to change their lives. Rather than a tome like "Catcher in the Rye" or Hitch-Hiker's or whatever, WGF is the book that ended up changing my life.Roody_Yogurt wrote:Robb, I'm 151 pages into it and having fun. Certainly, anything of note that I have written in my life is an attempt to just get as good as he was. He was the man, though, as far as I am concerned. The ultimate High Score Table. (Also: FUCK, I still can't believe/accept that he is dead.)

A non-text adventure Marid game could, without question, be the finest game ever created if it was done reasonably well. OK, that sentence doesn't make any sense, but still.Roody_Yogurt wrote:Also, the couple parts in the book where some guy hits some people with his car just makes me want to see a GTA3 version of a 'when gravity fails' series game.
If I were in charge of a software publishing company, I would contact his estate and see what it would take to get the video game rights to the books. (That sounds ghoulish -- I just mean his "estate" because he personally is no longer with us. And not because I want to exploit anybody or anything, instead just to make the best game possible.)
Along similar lines, I would love to make either a Red Dwarf, Lexx, or Tass Times in Tonetown game (or in the last case, sequel) at some point in my life. That would be heaven on earth. OK, technically "heaven" would be the girl with the lips getting intimately involved with the programmer guy as he is coding up her object, but that's close enough. Fuck, this paragraph makes me come off like a pathetic load of crap. Better wrap it up and hit submit.

Armored Core, maybe? I think I played the first one and it was pretty fun... didn't get as far as I would have liked, though.
Also, Robb, that's pretty cool that you like LEXX. I haven't really kept up with the tv show but the original tv movies (?) were pretty cool (although the fact that I liked it has earned at least one person's wrath). When they set the carnivorous worm things on the honor roll students in the first movie, I was hooked.
By the way, this is my 100th post. What a slow and arduous journey it has been.

I have no idea why I prefer her, in a head-to-head matchup. I shouldn't. But I do. Ah, well. I will never come within 1,000 miles of either of those girls so in the end, it doesn't even matter.Zev wrote:I got my boobies out, and even showed you all my blue pussy-hair..
All you get from her is the occasion 3-frame nipple-slip.
However, if I ever do find a girl that becomes my fiance and then my wife, I wonder if she'll get upset if I ask her if she wants to get about ten pounds of collagen injected into her lips, like Zev #2 there.

I don't have an URL, but I have the "Lexx" Showtime movies on CD. Perhaps I should extract them from disc and get them to you?bruce wrote:All right, someone post the URL. I have absolutely no idea what the fuck y'all are talking about, but this sounds like something I must see.
