NetHack, for starters, of course.

Others:

Vampire the Masquerade should be cheaper than most shareware these days. Realize that it doesn't help your, probably, larger goal, but still.

The Circuit's Edge is essentially freeware. You RP as one guy, but still. It's one of the best games ever made and you will LOVE it.

Some of the games in Bruce's link sound pretty good. Wish the epinions guy linked screenshots, but ehhh, it's a marvelous start.

DROD is a puzzle game and probably one of the most fucking frustrating ones you will ever find. You can lose some stages by not running a completely optimal path. Getting someone on those forums to post a fucking replay is like pulling teeth.

I don't know if ICJ is talking about Bloodlines or Redemption. Redemption at this point should cost you nothing, and if nothing else is a fun little NWN game.

But, we're straying from your original absurd premise. Barring the shitload prepetual beta MMORPGs, Betrayal at Krondor is still up on The Underdogs.

The Korean MMORPG list on those forums is fun for a laugh, but the FPS/Third Person Shooter has at least a few good looking things on it.
