I'd like to make a personal blog

Post by Worm »

I was thinking of doing a personal website so it's less traceable(right now my live journal name is jbernoski and has e-mail shit and all that). Does anyone have knowledge of nice simple blogging software I could host somewhere?

Also do you think five hundred bucks for worm.com would be worth it?

I had a lot of success with Wordpress. You can install it anywhere. You just need the name and password for your host's DB and you're all set. (Or, the db your host gives you.)

I mean, I have been able to copy text out of the BBS and post it directly into Wordpress, and it "just works." I could not be more thrilled.

$500 for Worm.com?! That is fairly reasonable as far as domain squatters go. I mean, it isn't - if you don't have a website up in 24 hours, I'd like to see a law passed that has the domain go back to the public - but considering what scum those people normally are, that's a low price.

I'd offer him $400 and see if he'd like to negotiate. But when you do, make sure you tell, "Ah... I'll boi it... at a hoi price!!!"

Yeah, having tried both Wordpress and Blogger, Wordpress is a lot slicker. The newer version of Blogger is a step up from what it once was, but I'd still stick with WP.

I use B2Evolution, on my blog at paul-robinson.us you need a MySql database and password; you run its installer and it puts in everything. Only problem, like probably everyone else, is unless you lock it down the spammers will flood it with filthy garbage linkspam.

Not unless you're in the business of selling worms by mail order. Question is, can you afford to blow $500 on a vanity domain name? You only need an easily rememberable name if you expect direct type-in traffic; in almost every other case people will find you by looking for the subject in a search engine and probably won't even bother using the name unless they remember it.

I picked up as many variations of my name as i could get, as a result, of the 14 versions of Paul Robinson (PAUL-ROBINSON and PAULROBINSON) ending in .COM, .NET, .ORG, .US, .BIZ, .INFO and .NAME, I own 9 of them, and I only paid the standard price. I own both versions of .US, .INFO and .ORG plus some of the others.

As for your own "WORMS.COM" I tried a few variations; you can register .INFO names for the first year for 99c; others are $9.95.

The name IAMWORM.COM is available; you could register all three major versions (.COM, .ORG, .NET) for $30. Also WORMSTOP.COM, WORMTIME.COM, WORMSTAND.COM and WORMTALK.COM plus the other variations ending in .ORG and .NET.

This would give you an otherwise reasonable domain without paying a premium price that really isn't critical. Unless you have a business or some specific reason, I don't see paying a premium price for a domain name.

I just ran "worm.com" through the domain checker, and the advanced selector offered up all of the following as available, any of them can be registered for $9.00 or less at GoDaddy:

Each single URL in that list is fantastic(I'm partial to BESTWORMONLINE.COM)! Now I have the problem of not being able to choose. How is godaddy? I wanted to have one URL for my blog and one maybe for a stupid business idea. Now would the second URL be something I could drop easily if it doesn't pan out?

I have used GoDaddy for the past several years to create and abandon countless websites, without a single complaint!
Am I a hero? I really can't say. But, yes.

So pick two names. Hell, you were ready to pay $500 for one. Register ten different names, it will cost roughly $100 for one year, don't select automatic renewal, then let 8 of them automatically expire at the end of the year when you can decide which ones you like. Remember they're only charging 99c for names ending in .INFO so you could pick some of those too.

Most people figure .COM as the premium Top Level Domain so you may prefer that over something else. I couldn't get .COM as other people (and I've actually had conversations with them) got Paul Robinson and Paul-Robinson first in .COM.

If you can afford it you might want to do several versions of the same name, so if you pick a name like TASTELESSWORMFOOD you get .COM, .NET, .ORG and perhaps some of the others like .INFO, .NAME and if you're US based, .US (or .CA if you're Canadian, eh?)

I have had fairly good results with Godaddy as almost everything is automated. When I have had to talk to one of their people, I call their number in Arizona - obviously at these prices they can't offer a toll-free number, and I have no problem with that - and they've been very knowledgeable and have usually solved the problem while I was on the phone.

The only thing I might have a "problem" with is their relatively high security when logging in to change account information, if you miss more than three times, they lock your account until you call in and ask for a reset. That's not the problem; the problem is the system doesn't always tell you this, and you're banging away trying to log in when it's locked you out and doesn't tell you that you're locked out.

You can always cancel a domain name at any time and release it, or you can simply not pay the renewal fee and it will go into suspense and someone else can get it. Rest assured if it ends in .COM, if you let it go either by canceling or by not paying the renewal fee, a domain speculator will snap it up to see if they get any click-through traffic.

No, but it looks like .XXX will finally become available.

Also, .INFO domains are now $1.04 (from GoDaddy; everyone else charges more) for the first year because of increased ICANN fees.
