Intel i5, GA-P55M-UD2 continuous short beeps

Post by Ice Cream Jonsey »

I bought a combo kit from NewEgg. It doesn't work. I'm just using this thread as a sort of reminder to what I have and have not tried, but feel free to comment. So frustrating.

Purchased the following:

Intel Core i5-750 Lynnfield 2.66GHz 8MB L3 Cache LGA 1156 95W Quad-Core Processor - Retail

GIGABYTE GA-P55M-UD2 LGA 1156 Intel P55 Micro ATX Intel Motherboard - Retail

G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model F3-12800CL9D-4GBRL

Rosewill Green Series RG700-S12 700W Continuous @40°C,80 PLUS Certified,Single 12V Rail,ATX12V v2.3 / EPS12V v2.91,SLI Ready,CrossFire Ready,Active PFC"Compatible with Core i7, i5" Power Supply - Retail

It wouldn't post. I had a situation where the thing was constantly rebooting itself after about 7 or 8 seconds. The case I had did not have a PC speaker (!!) so at first I couldn't speak to the beeps.

I RMAed the RAM and sent it back to Newegg.

Since that would be two weeks, and I have no guarantee it would solve the issue, I bought ram at MicroCenter today. I purchased:

OCZ DDR3 PC3-12800/ 1600MHz / Value Series / Obsidian XTC Heatspreader / 2GB Module / 4GB Kit

Well, I installed that in the white slots on the motherboard, and grabbed a PC speaker from an old case. I am now getting a continuous series of short beeps. I think it goes over to long beeps before too long, but Jesus. It doesn't power cycle any longer.

So, I tried a 500 watt power supply I had upstairs. Now, this power supply is not v2.3, I don't think - it's a couple years old, anyway. Didn't really expect it to work (although continual short beeps means "power issue."

So, two power supplies and two attempts with RAM. Guess I am going to try another copy of the motherboard tomorrow, Christ. If that's it, I can then return the original one, and if it's not it, I RMA the chip. You basically need two computers to troubleshoot one.

"What's the error say?"

"It says, 'beep beep beep beep beep' ..." SLAP.

This joke was brought to you by the Three Stooges.

It's dead. They're all dead. Get an RMA for the mobo and processor and get new stuff. Get all new stuff. Funny, newegg doesn't usually sell dead stuff. It's not worth the time to diagnose the problem, just get new stuff before thirty days is up.

Yeah, it was the motherboard. I bought an Asus mobo at Microcenter.

I don't mind the RAM coming back. I'll put 8 gigs into my Windows 7 machine, it's fine, whatever. But I'm getting a return on this motherboard.

I have 8 gigs on my Windows 2003 servers and it's amazing. I'm running VMWare Server on it as well and have three or four virtual boxes running all the time and you would never know it. When I build a box these days I buy decent mobos and procs and then fill it with as much RAM as it'll hold.

You should check it with your seller or with the customer service of Intel. They can surely help you with that.
