Flash Game That Makes Me Want To Play Flash Game

Post by Ice Cream Jonsey »

Sanctuary-17 by Twofold Secret. Twofold Secret is two guys, Chris Klimas and Joel Haddock!

I would initially describe it as a cross between Shamus, Berzerk and Not Doom 3. (You can shoot and use the flashlight at the same time, you see.)

Thanks for the heads-up. I have liked what I've seen so far.

I'm wondering if you ever saw Portal, the Flash Game, by We Build Stuff. Basically they used the idea from one of the greatest games ever written, Portal, and put it in a 2-d space. My understanding was they designed it before the actual game Portal came out.

Then they released an add-on map pack for the Valve version of Portal that introduces a whole new set of traps that weren't in the original game, including red walls that will kill you if you touch them, blue walls that block you (same as similar ones in the original game), but can be used like floors if below you, and the very interesting microwave zones in which you have to pass through while they are off with a reset for a few seconds, or they'll kill you.

But I've digressed a little. These features were in the Flash version, just in a 2-D space. A lot of really interesting puzzles to solve, made even more maddeningly complicated with the addition of 3-D to the mix.

But I'll take a look at Sanctuary-17.

I do not like this game. Every time you get killed, you start over from scratch. The supposed "save" by connecting to a terminal doesn't work. And you only have three lives. Hello? The idea of this coin-op crapola of limited lives excrement should have died off once Doom came out. We're not playing for quarters here, there is no excuse in having a game with limited playing capability and (even plainly unforgivable) not allowing you to save at any time or at least regularly.

I mean, this isn't I Want to Be the Guy! And let's just (out of charity for the game, of which the game itself has very little) for the moment ignore the really cheesy pixelated graphics like out of 1980s CGA-based games (and even at that there were better ones; the original Lode Runner did a fantastic job despite being limited to the 16-color mode for high-resolution on the CGA adapter). Or let's not ignore it, it's terrible!

At least with Portal: The Flash Game if you die you start over at the beginning of the level, you don't start over at the beginning of the game.

Lame, lame, lame. To quote Pinback's old friend Michael Raugh, "It sucks rancid tuna."

I like multiple lives. Also, let's not skate over that issue - different people are entering the Sanctuary. I am sure it's been done elsewhere ... but I can't remember when, and it's been a long, long time since I've seen it.

(God, that sentence is so unfair to the developers. "I know I've seen your brilliant decision to have different characters represent the three lives, but I can't recall when. Believe me, if you two guys who made it are out there, I realize I made a cunty statement. This is a case where the people talking about your game are beneath contempt. I will try to make everything I say after this better.)

Tdarcos, you make a good point about the pixel graphics. I think it was a very conscious decision for them to have shading and light sources, however. I think that games like Shamus and Berzerk would have done what S-17 did, if they could have done it at the time. But back then, your choices were limited to displaying the sprite or not displaying the sprite. I also really like the merging of retro graphics with some art elements the devs have access to today.

I'll ask them about the computer consoles. Maybe it was unintentional!
