Galactic Civilizations

Post by bruce »

OK, so I've been playing Galactic Civilizations.

I've been having a lot of fun going for cultural victories.

One of the ways you do this is to build starbases near other planets, and then load them up with cultural modules, like "Party Palace" and "Galactic Waterpark." If you have a lot of cultural influence near someone else's planet, that planet is likely to defect to your civilization.

My starbases have these things. So you can figure they're full of drunken Space Fratboys swilling beer and doing bellyflops, and acting as startlingly effective cultural ambassadors.

But then, you can also add Terror Star Technology to your starbases. This lets you a) move your starbases very slowly around the galaxy, and b) blow up star systems' suns.

So I gave some of my starbases these.

Now I want you to imagine the scene. You're a nice, timid little member of the Yor Collective, a race of spacefaring living robots who want to exterminate all organic life. And suddenly this....thing pulls into orbit overhead. You head up there, and there's Biff. He hands you a brewski and a reefer, and the two of you start flailing down the waterslides. Then you go to Hooter's. And he says something like, "Hey, dude! Check out the gazongas on that chick! Hey! You want another beer? Here ya go! I got something cool to show you! You see those guys in that room in there? They're at the control panel for this thing that, can, like, blow out your sun like a match! Rock on, dude!"

My birthday is on Sunday. Maybe I will go buy this game as a "present" to myself.

(My other present will be a bottle of Safeway "Safeway" Brand Vodka-Topping, a shot glass, and a vow to not ask myself 'what am I doing with my life?')

Either this or Flashpoint. You make the call!
the dark and gritty...Ice Cream Jonsey!

I tried to pick this up on my way home from work as a MOO3 consolation prize, but couldn't find it anywhere. So now I have to wait for shipping from an online vendor. It is a tragedy. But happy birthday, Robb. Congratulations on making it another year without dying.

That too.

But also, you can just buy and download it from galciv.com.

That's what I did.

Holy shit. I'm getting the game now for probably a bit less than I was before (five bucks more to the base price, but no shipping fee) and then on top of that they're still sending the CD along in the mail for me. This is possibly the greatest retail experience I have ever had.

Okay, what the shit? The shipping is not, as previously stated, free. They just don't tell you anything about shipping at all until after checkout, giving the illusion of freeness. Hardly matters, as I'm still breaking even since I don't have to shell out for next day air to placate my impatience. And, if you don't feel the need for a backup copy, shipping would end up being free.

That would be me. Although I guess I oughta burn the files to a CD, huh?
