ROM - Read Only Memories

Ignore the whole "Gaymer" tag because I know a few of the developers and they are trying to create a solid RPG inspired by random Sega CD titles. I trust them.

What "off the beaten path" games is everyone else looking forward to in 2014?

I can't name a single game, or movie for that matter, I'm looking forward to in 2014. My only hope for 2014 is to live to see 2015.

Here's my list from the 5 games I'm looking forward to in 2013 thread:
Flack wrote:01. Grand Theft Auto V
02. Need for Speed: Most Wanted
03. SimCity 2013
04. Star Wars 1313
05. Wasteland 2
Here's how that went:

Grand Theft Auto V: played it, liked it.
Need for Speed: Most Wanted: didn't buy it.
SimCity 2013: didn't buy it.
Star Wars 1313: was cancelled.
Wasteland 2: was not released.

I'll bow out of this year's selections. Good luck, everybody.

Pinback, I am doing this list. Although looking at my backed Kickstarters, so many of them I've given up hope on that frankly, I'm not really anticipating them. If they put a date there and miss it by a year I'm fine with it. That's just software development. When it starts going beyond a year, the anticipation is gone.

If you can just GIVE ME SOME TIME I will make my list.

Could you also make a list of upcoming games you think look terrible? I'd probably find a few I'd like on there. LOLOL BURN.

PINBACK'S MOST ANTICIPATED GAMES OF 2014!!!

First, let's review:

PINBACK'S MOST ANTICIPATED GAMES OF 2013

...and see how that all turned out:

#5: BLOW'S HOUSE OF 923 CONNECT-THE-DOTS PUZZLES - Didn't come out. I'd put it on this list but FOOL ME ONCE, jackass.

#4: COMMAND: MODERN AIR/NAVAL WAR GAME THING THAT HAD A MUCH BETTER NAME WHEN IT WAS IN DEVELOPMENT ("RED PILL") - $80 plus iffy initial reviews = no chance.

#3: STAR LORDS - Went to Beta. Then went back to alpha because everyone, mainly the publishers, agreed that you gotta be kidding me.

#2: STARCRAFT 2: KERRIGAN'S BUTT - It came out! It is SC2. The single player was great. The multiplayer is still a phenomenon, though I never play anymore. I will always love SC2.

#1: GRAND THEFT NIGGA 5 - Phenomenal. And yet, I barely played it. It's not them, it's me. I look at it, think, this is incredible, and then stop playing. My life is over.

So in general that didn't turn out too well. But undaunted, we press on, with:

PINBACK'S MOST ANTICIPATED GAMES OF 2014!!!

#5: CYBERGANKED

Image

It was fifteen years ago that I admonished the IF developer community to further the goddamn art.

In that time, they have roundly failed to do just that. Until now! Robb Sherwin's upcoming RPG/IF hybrid promises to further not only the art of IF, but that of RPGs themselves with its wild, post-cyberpunk, bitcoin-drenched party-based whirlwind of adventure and insanity!

Good luck, Robb! We're all counting you!

#4: UNDETERMINED SPACE 4X GAME

Image

2014 is the Year of the Space 4X Game. You can't believe how many are currently expected.

God. One of them HAS to be good, doesn't it? Please? This entry is a placeholder for whichever one of these (God, please) ends up being worth anticipating.

#3: TROPICO 5
Image

Tropico 3 and 4 were great. I had both of them. And I never really played them. I feel bad about that. But rather than live in the past, I'll just wait for 5, and promise to play the hell out of that one. I promise. I promise. I'll even write that review, free of charge, Jonsey.

#2: GALACTIC CIVILIZATIONS 3

Image

Though 2014 is the Year of the Space 4X Game, there's really only one that matters. Contrary to what some terrible purple websites keep trying to convince everyone, the GalCiv franchise is the very best in the business, and has been for over a decade. If Brad can restrain himself from writing a book about it, and instead focus on the programming tasks at hand, I expect this to keep GC on top of the space 4x game for the coming future, no matter what comes out of #4 (above).

#1: ELITE: DANGEROUS

Image

You almost don't want to talk about it, like it might jinx it.

Better safe than sorry.

I have to revise my list, because GC3's final release will not be until mid-2015 at the earliest. So I am replacing my #2 MOST ANTICIPATED GAME to:

WARLOCK II: THE EXILED
Image

Warlock II is the sequel to 2012's "Warlock: Master of the Arcane", which was a solid but unremarkable piece of fantasy 4x. Warlock II aims to fulfill the promise of the first game's potential, and then some! I am defini-- Ah, we have a question from the audience? Yes sir, please step up to the microphone, state your first name, and I'll attempt to answer your question!

Hi, my name's Jeff.

Hello Jeff! What can I answer for you?

Isn't this a total fucking cop-out, because not only were you not anticipating (or even aware of) this game when you first wrote this list, BUT you also happened to get an Early Access copy of it, AND you already know you love it and it's like your new favorite game ever?! Isn't ALL OF THIS [Jeff waves his hands about] TRUE?!?!

Yes.

I guess we're done here.

Thanks for showing faith in me. I can tell you that after burning two months on the old house, there isn't a prayer that Cyberganked gets done in 2014.

"First Quarter 2015" is the new ETA. Thank God I haven't Kickstartered it yet.

Hmmm. Okay, well, then I guess I have to redo my #5 as well.

Uhhhh.

UHHHHHHHhh.

#5: HAM SANDWICH
Image

Hey, who doesn't like a delicious ham sandwich? Look at that picture! Don't you want that? Aren't you looking forward to that? I am looking forward to HAM SANDWICH in 2014. HAM SANDWICH is my fifth most anticipated game.

Not really. It was indicted last week for being too kosher.

(There is an old joke that getting something indicted by a grand jury is so trivial that most prosecutors could get a ham sandwich indicted.)

Ham is always strictly forbidden by both the Jewish and Muslim religions. Kosher food is held to an even higher standard than ordinary food that complies with Jewish dietary rules because it can be served during one of their highest of high holidays, Passover.

Indicting a ham sandwich for being too kosher is like kicking an enforcer out of the Mafia for being too cruel and sadistic, or firing an IRS agent for being too aggressive in collecting back taxes.

It was intended to be as ridiculous a comment as you naming a ham sandwich as a top 5 anticipated game.

Okay, Warlock 2 moves down to #5 to replace Cyberganked. And the NEW #2 is:

Yes, this was the big reason why I delayed Cyberganked until 2015. Look at that thing. I got a warning that it was gonna drop and so I adjusted accordingly.

Why can't someone make a sequel to Alpha Centauri then?
