They will say anything to guilt you into buying stuff. Quick! Kill the television. Actually, I watch the ads with the sound off and analyze stuff like the target audience the advertisers are trying to reach.

In all my years of having to watch TV ads I noticed that health products have stuck to the same basic plot formula. (If you can actually call a commercial having a plot) I guess it must work.

1] Consumer with a problem: 8 to 10 seconds

2] Helpful friend/spouse shows consumer a solution product: 3 to 8 seconds

3] Cut away to the product features: 5 seconds

4] Consumer is all better: 8 seconds

Note: These times are for reference only and do not necessarily add up to 30 seconds for those that need to count such things..

From MarketingCharts.com:

"For example, among the total 18-24 population, weekly live TV viewing averaged 15 hours and 11 minutes per week in Q4 2015, while DVR and time-shifted TV viewing averaged 1 hour and 11 minutes per week."

Teens (12-17) watched 15 hours and 36 minutes of traditional TV per week in Q4, a rather large 14.5% drop year-over-year and a 29.8% contraction from 2011;

Older Millennials (25-34) watched 23 hours and 12 minutes per week in Q3, a 6.7% decrease year-over-year and a 22.5% drop from 2011;

Gen Xers (35-49) watched 31 hours and 25 minutes per week, just a 3% decrease year-over-year and an 8.3% contraction from 2011;

Adults aged 50-64 watched 42 hours and 59 minutes per week, a 1.1% increase year-over-year a 1.7% rise from Q4 2011;

Adults aged 65 and older watched 50 hours and 53 minutes per week, up 1.8% from the previous year and up almost 8% from 2011.

So... yes.

I remember the Ax commercials most prominently from my teen years, and just recently the masterminds behind it revealed how they targeted it. Specially, they broke male down into the following:

The Predator -- He takes advantage of drunk girls, and lies about his job and where he lives

Natural Talent -- Athletic, smart, and confident. He doesn't need to lie to score

Marriage Material -- Humble and respectful, he's the sort of guy you want to bring home to Mom and Dad

Always the Friend -- He always hits that glass ceiling

The Insecure Novice -- He has absolutely no clue what he's doing, and things get awkward fast -- the geeks and nerds

The Enthusiastic Novice -- He has absolutely no clue what he's doing, but he's outgoing and tries valiantly anyway

And discovered no one was marketing to the last two (and I just had to turn off whatever shitty music playing loaftergirl's Strumbellas link led me to.) So ya... Talk about shallow.
