I don't mind finding those monster/treasure rooms from time to time, but starting off in one is a bit unfair.

What about THIS, a brand new first-person version! It cleverly makes it feel like it's a real-time game, but it's still turn-based, just presented in a novel way.
In my experience, the novelty wore off after about 15 minutes, but hey, I'm glad someone did this:
