Does there need to be a distinction? Isn't what you described "already accomplished" ?
Jonsey will do what Jonsey will; I was suggesting that this is simply a reinvention, a reiteration, instead of a new beginning because this place is about as relevant as my cheese sandwhich (though it is quite a good sandwhich. Mayo on either side and a piece of pastrami in the middle. Maybe its a pastrami sandwhich? How does one account for the mayo and pickles? A pickle sandwhich? Formulate a theory on the mustard... Understand the process is quite involed. Why isn't there any radish?)

BTW, just to get this out in the open, I have just now stated to Worm, over IM, that my true belief is that Jonsey will NEVER, ever ever, implement a telnet BBS or a MUD version of the BBS, or any other version of the BBS other than this.
Prove me wrong, Jones. Prove me wrong.
(But it'll never happen. We're here to stay, folks.)

The thing is, if it were technologically possible to have created a telnet board from the instance of the dial-up version of "Jolt Country" running on the DOS BBS software Maximus in 2002, I would have done it when I created this phpBB forum and that would be that. The phpBB install started off as a kludge from what I was truly happy with and it's just sort of... sprawled.Draal wrote:Jonsey - Does the health of this forum contribute to the day to day running that occurs around you? There are over 20,000 posts, around 140 people who have been a part of the community from time to time, and now the move to a telnet BBS?
I guess there are positives and negatives to each.
POSITIVES TO MOVING TO TELNET
- Format. I greatly prefer the way boards used to be. In fact, it's a weeping, crying shame that everyone chose the "forum" branch of the tech tree rather than the "make BBSs accessible all over the Internet" branch because we had a wonderful infrastructure in place with dial-up boards. Experienced system operators, literate users, interesting games, the ability to throw messages all over the globe ... at least in the case of two of those we're still not quite there. I mean, there's no Pimpwars for Internet forums.
- Control. Each message is its own file on Maximus. I am not "dissing" databases or anything, but the hilarious restraints of phpBB dictate that your webhost can fracture your ability to get a good database dump. Not an issue with Maximus.
- User Experience. I like reading an individual message, deciding if I have anything to say, and going from there. Putting things into "threads" always bugged me. Just the opposite bugs lots of people who run forums and who will die, just DIE if something goes off-topic. The way I used to run my BBS it was not an issue.
- Nostalgia. I mean, I won't pretend that's not a factor.
- Not that we have sigs or avatars, but it's kind of closing the book on them forever this way.
- Doors. Lord, Tradewars, etc.
NEGATIVES
- Images. Actually, the only case of them being useful is in that top 100 thread. A link works just as well for almost every other one we've ever displayed. OK, maybe in the Thing game BUT STILL.
- Worldleeeeeeeeness. Still an issue for this particular website! Are we trying to create a cozy atmosphere where 12 people in a subset of 30 entertain each other, or are we open to the world with the idea of growing it to a bigger "community"? Actually, it's always bugged me that some moron can declare that he likes Horrorclix, set up a Phorum and get 20,000 like-minded people to come on over and chat about what Corporeal Menasaur's dial is going to look like. But that's this whole other thing.
- Idiot Stomping. About once every three or four months, some worthless fuck logs on here to stir shit up and I exude an endless string of profanity. We would presumably be losing that, as the telnet site would not be archived in Google and therefore, as Lysander was saying, not prone to the drop-by. I'm not going to say it's theraputic or anything, but as John Fox once said, it IS what it IS.
Possibly.Isn't this just adding a layer of exclusion to the process of simply, communicating with people?
What were the sites?Recently, I've seen two sites make concentrated efforts, to seperate themselves from forums that didn't "meet the expectations or express the values they wanted associated with their site" and its a curious approach to the whole "I'm busy, feel obligated to this place, so I'm just going to seperate us as a way to make myself feel less committed." This forum is neat and everything, a place for people to vent feelings and be people they couldn't be else where, except its just a few pages imposed in a few pixels, marked with words that happen to express an idea.

But I already DID, throughout the entire 90s! Furthermore, if I may be so bold, I kept the same system going for 9 years. There was none of this "Bull & Finch I, "Bull & Finch II" and "Bull & Finch III." But then again, I am not much of a juice drinker, either.pinback wrote:BTW, just to get this out in the open, I have just now stated to Worm, over IM, that my true belief is that Jonsey will NEVER, ever ever, implement a telnet BBS or a MUD version of the BBS, or any other version of the BBS other than this.

Okay, I am looking into hosting. Got a list from inky because he's the goddamn man. And you know what? There was no judging. I didn't have to tell him that this place is becoming a supervirus cold room for swear words and we'd like to break it out a little.

I'll read up on that list of links later.

And a 450!pinback wrote:That's fine, you can go that way. You can make this contentious. I wasn't trying to be contentious, I was just making the point that I think you're a lazy, deceitful scumbag.
Because the hot sauce, if it ever appears (or actually exists in any other form other than the St. Elsewhere Ending currently revolving around in your brain) I will no longer be a 450!Why do you have to turn that into an uncomfortable situation like we have now?

SpicyKat batch #7 is not too much hotter than that. It really mellowed.
But let's get back to the point of you not turning this BBS into a telnet BBS with doors and stuff.
