The Jack Straw joke does not sit well with me. I am still disgusted by, bothered by, and hurt by what happened. And for as removed as I may have been from him (distanced through the internet) Adam, Noel, and Mia were human beings. So are Noel and Mia's mothers, family and friends. And joking about doesn't change that, and it diminishes the value of those human lives effected by this tragedy. And though I know I have joked, and have used humor as a means protect myself or to prevent the suffering that comes from the acknowledgement of tragedy, I don't want to do that, especially in this. I would rather focus my efforts towards preventing things like that from happening again.ICJ wrote:I think it is safe to say that Jizaboz leans Republican. Right? For the record, while I believe money just can't be thrown at problems and there should be more spending oversight (Last Week Tonight had a great bit on "special-purpose districts" the other week), I would not call myself a fiscal conservative. Just way too much bullshit falls under that label, like privatization of government services (where our taxes still pay for these things- just without the benefit of, ya know, actually being in charge of them) or thinly-veiled policies that definitely do not exist for the benefit of the average taxpayer.ICJ wrote:Roody: Socially liberal, fiscally conservative? Nah, straw would hate being ridiculed. Not sure liberal tho, he always had a warped outlook of fair is fair but skewed towards him. I never met Mia but Noel was one of the smartest kids I've met and the worst part to me is she had to know something was wrong beforehand. Don't get angry over joking shit about Adam, we're saying he was a piece of shit. Better instead to get mad at the Rochester and NY cops who should have taken seriously and could have stopped him on the freeway.

Yeah, in all seriousness (regarding his politics) I got a sense from him that he was a "I lifted myself up from the bootstraps, so everyone else should too" kind of guy. The thing was, he had an incredible amount of anger and obviously had no problem blaming other people for it. And if he wasn't so obsessed with the mistakes he'd made in the past and blaming others for them, he would have had a lot of opportunity to make a better life for himself. I think both CO and my brother were in situations where Jack had asked if they could recommend him for a job where they worked or something, but he was so consumed with inward anger that you couldn't put your reputation on the line for him.CO wrote:Nah, straw would hate being ridiculed. the dark and gritty...Ice Cream Jonsey!
That's exactly it, he threw away any natural gifts with horrifically bad substance abuse and reckless behavior then had the nerve to think he should be a cop because "they fucked me over so I want to be on that side of it". His family was rich but he fucked them over, he cheated on Rachel with her friend then fucked them both over with abuse but through it all he was the victim. He even almost killed his brother driving fast drunk. I can't even give him a mental health excuse, no way was he even bi-polar. So more and ruder jokes are in order.Ice Cream Jonsey wrote:]Yeah, in all seriousness (regarding his politics) I got a sense from him that he was a "I lifted myself up from the bootstraps, so everyone else should too" kind of guy. Even if that was the case... there are always two sides to every story, he can't tell his anymore. And I can't help wonder if he had more people in his life trying to lift him up, rather than tear him down if it would have been better. Ultimately, he is responsible for his actions, which were horrifying and awful, and sad. Which is why I have trouble finding humor in them.

That kid was given more chances in 30 years than most people get their whole life, from his parents, from his brother, from the women in his "life", even from the courts. Personally I gave him job recommendations based on the fact that he actually was smart and could work with technology efficiently when he wanted to. People with less chances wouldn't have been able to commit the double murder because they would have been serving a long jail sentence for his many criminal violations (to the end his parents bailed him out and paid for lawyers for his fuckups).loafergirl wrote:Even if that was the case... there are always two sides to every story, he can't tell his anymore. His final action says it all. If you want out of life, fine please kill yourself but what he did says he wanted to punish the people who he felt did him wrong: the mothers of the kids. His side of the story is obvious from the rest of his life: "i'm a victim of other people so I'm going to spite them".
There's no humor in what he did but my sense is people here are a bit embarrassed that we hung out with him and didn't see or want to see what he was capable of so we make jokes to take away from him.

I didn't say you couldn't. I said I wasn't. Because it still fucking hurts. One of the worst parts is knowing one had to have been awake when it happened. And in THIS, again, I would rather prevent it from happening. Joking can be great sometimes, but it doesn't address the contributing factors that led up to those actions.Lg wrote:No you cant!
