The Quake II: Jailbreak EXPERIMENT

Okay, I am serious about this. If I don't come up with a date and time to try to play Jailbreak again, fuck, I may never.
So my first question is this - Jiz, you have said that you have had a Quake II server up, right? Is that still a thing? Can you share the address?
The files to run Jailbreak are here:
http://acmectf.com/downloads/mods/jailbreak/
And I will mirror them here:
https://www.caltrops.com/downloads/jailbreak
From here, I think we need to figure out if the Steam version of Quake 2 will work for this. I am telling you guys this is an AWESOME and FUN game. If it works then I think we throw out a time and figure out a way for us to all be connected via voice.

This is a list of servers with Quake II multiplayer - I will try to connect to one running jailbreak and write instructions on how to install the mod:

You mean we'd all have to be on at the SAME time?

Right, we'd all have to be on at the same time, so this might take planning. But fuck it, if we don't make time when will we ever make time?
Here's Quake 2. I'd buy it for everyone but it's five bucks.

So I tried to find better graphics for this and that's a debacle. I got a mod called Berserker and there were no instructions so I found some.
Ok guys, here is a quick install guide + some tips:
- Copy the content of your Quake2 folder to another folder of your choice, Quake2Berserker for example. This way you will keep your original Quake2 game intact and you can play them both, compare them.
- Extract zip content (mod files) into newly created folder. Overwrite when asked.
- Install OpenAL (no sound/game crashes problem) from here Openal.org, 800 KB file, 2 sec install.
- That's it, now launch Berserker.exe.
I hope it makes sense.

Do we have people that might be interested in this? I'm drafting Ben. I assume Jizaboz would be in since it is his server. How about anyone else?
This upcoming weekend my wife is out of town so I should have lots of available time for it. I'm telling you guys this mod is FUN AS HELL.

Oh, your wife is out of town? So you have plenty of time for it?

Yes! She is going on a trip with her sister and her mother for her mother's birthday. Also, Gritty was up every day at 6AM to be let out. Which was fine, happy to have that routine. But this will be the first weekend in a while where I can sleep in til 8.
Friday night will be a pizza with EXTRA CHEESE FACE.
Saturday and Sunday will be text game programming.
Somewhere in there will hopefully be Jailbreak.
Look, you're a big time paid Twitch streamer now. This is free content that you don't have to do anything for. Except participate. Get fragged and spend the next two hours in the eponymous cell, I don't care. But you ARE here and you ARE playing the game.

I am sure that Quake 2 runs on Linux. If I figure out how to do this, are you in?
(Edited to add - you don't need to be on Steam to play Jailbreak, I just thought it was a simple way to get the game if you didn't have it already.)

ALSO! I don't know what Jiz's schedule is like, is there any chance you can turn the server on for, say, Thursday, for us to test this out before the weekend to see if we can get it going?

Well, it seems a little
daunting but I will give it a shot. I gotta see if I got the speed and ram. The new machine wasn't built for games, it was built for quiet and compactness.

Hey sorry guys.. missed this over the weekend.
1. My Quake II server runs in Amazon Linux. The server library files for the mod are unfortunately .dll files inside of the .zip file and this is one reason why my server runs a different mod. So, for us all to play this Jailbreak mod we will just need to play on someone elses server.
2. The client files are compatible with all OS versions of the client. For both Windows and Linux, I strongly recommend this client
https://skuller.net/q2pro/ because trying the original old binaries typically doesn't work out well. You'll get random crashes if you are able to start and connect at all.
I'm game whenever!

Got it. Now what?

At this point, hit the ~ (tilde) key. This should open a console.
Our best bet (maybe only) for a public Jailbreak server is the TastySpleen server. They are reliable and in TX I believe. So, to connect to their server simply type the following into the console:
connect 23.227.170.222:27921
And hit enter. I don't THINK you'll even have to download the client files.. but you may. Just try to connect and it may auto-download what you need. If you don't have everything, you may notice a folder named "jail" in the quake 2 folder. That's where the Jailbreak client mod files go.

I made a folder amd stuck the files in there. Jailbreak seems to work ok, I didnt try to log on anywhere yet. It's been forever since I played a PC FPS. Last time was Halo 2 on RobB's xbox.
I feel I will be respawning a lot

Nice!
ICJ when do you want to try to arrange to do this?
