No. If I put an 'other' option we'll all just mess this up and the hate will spread.

I voted yes because Robert DiNero got it explained to him by Zoolander

I voted no because the people who wrote the song said it's not, and the guy who wrote the poem it's based on said it's not.

But that can't be right because it goes against my conspiracy theory. Obviously it's a witch hunt

The accusation being made that the song Puff the Magic Dragon is a drug-related song, to wit, marijuana, a.k.a. pot, and whether it is or is not guilty of this charge. The indictment having been made, I will give my reasoning, and from that, you can infer how I voted in this topic's poll.

We should take the lyrics of a song first, and the claims of the composer second, in determining if a song is more than what it says. We can give either acceptance or rejection of their remarks because people are unreliable, and sometimes, they lie. The words themselves should be given the most weight of the evidence in making this determination.

Notwithstanding John Lennon's claim it is not, Lucy in the Sky, With Diamonds, is quite likely a reference to a trip on LSD. First, the song lyrics have no reference to a woman, jewelry, or any other real-world things. But the song depicts phantasmagorical occurrences and visions, which is what an acid trip is purportedly like, and the name of the song can be used to take the first letters of the title to get LSD. I believe these items would be enough to convict that song on the charge of being a song about an LSD trip.

In Puff the Magic Dragon, the song presents the viewpoint of an imaginary dragon, as if it was real, and how he and Jackie Paper played together. All the references are reasonable in describing the games a child would have in self-play (for obvious reasons, I did not say "the experiences a boy would have when playing by himself," or "with himself.") The name "Puff," might imply that, but "dragon," or "magic dragon." or PMD (the first initials of the (important) words of the song title) have no reference or callback to marijuana.

I first heard this comment, years ago, and dismissed it then, as even a casual listen to the lyrics would lead to the conclusion it's simply showing the playtime of a boy using his imagination, from the view of the imagined character.

So, for the reasons above, I find Puff the Magic Dragon, to be NOT GUILTY of being a drug-related song.

I absolutely loathe the song and the animated movie.

When I was a kid watching it for the first time, it just made be feel awful for some reason. The music, the colors, everything. About 3/4s of the way through the movie I got violently ill and puked all over the place. Felt a lot better after that, and never looked at the movie ever again.

So perhaps some happier songs are in order.

Just to clarify, you felt fine, and then started watching this and it made you so sick you vomited? Or you had eaten a bad bean burrito and you barfed while the song was on and then you couldn't listen it it anymore?

I was only maybe 6 years old? I recall feeling ok beforehand but I can’t remember what I ate. I had a couple of odd spells like that with my stomach at random as a kid though. The worst time was at the mall. Lol
