Re: The Saddest Christmas Moment
There is candy store that is in the plaza across from the day care that my little nephew Wyatt attends. Wyatt is two and a half and he is a really good little boy. I pick him up from day care on Wednesdays.
When I picked him up today he asked if I had any carrots. Carrots are a much, much better thing to have him snack on after day care than candy, but I also wanted to get some gifts at this candy store for Christmas, for family members.
I take him to the candy store and it's pretty small, this isn't a giant overblown thing. There is lots of candy at toddler level. I told him he could pick out some things and I looked at the gift packages. He likes gummy based candy (a native Coloradoan) and took one candy package which is a bunch of gummy candy in the shape of fast food. It occurs to me now that maybe that wasn't a great influence on a future healthy lifestyle.
We bring it to the counter and the gal comes out and.............. my wallet is not there.
I thought I had it before I left my house, but no, I did not visually check. The gal behind the register is nice about it. I don't want to leave Wyatt in the store but also it's dark out and the dog is in my car and I have to at least check to see if my wallet somehow got between the seats.
I can't find it and assume it is home. I go back inside and I see that Wyatt had added a couple of more pieces of candy to the counter where the register is. I tell the gal that I am going to check my car one more time. I am flustered. I pick up Wyatt and put him in the front seat of my car. The dog is being good, but still, I also want to make sure the toddler and dog do not get out of the car and start running around a parking lot with cars going by.
I go inside and ask if they take other forms of payment and thank god they do! Venmo! Good ol Venmo. I pay for the candy with that and take the bag back to the car.
As I approach, Wyatt is in the front seat of my car and he is crying. As far as he knows his uncle took him to a candy store for some reason, let him pick things out and then went PSYCHE and brought him back to the car empty handed. To his credit, he was also crying in a very normal disappointed way and not having a hysterical meltdown.
THIS was the saddest Christmas scene I can imagine.
But luckily, thanks to alternate payment methods (always liked that field of commerce) I was able to produce the bag and he had a couple pieces of gummy french fries before I drove him home.
(The wallet was on my computer desk helpfully standing up against the keyboard because past me wanted to make sure I did not forget to bring it.)

It's a Christmas miracle! You almost scarred him for life, or at least taught him the universe can sometimes blow dead bear

Re: The Saddest Christmas Moment
I sure don't. I do not keep credit cards and credit card info on my phone. My feeling was that if my phone was stolen, it was one less thing the thief had if they got in.
But with passcodes and the likelihood of a thief just wanting to factory reset my phone and sell it for meth, it's probably something that I would benefit in having.

Re: The Saddest Christmas Moment
Honestly I had a phone stolen while open by a meth head at Walmart 2 years ago and there was no immediate burn to my accounts. I have for years been having occasional fraud charges which I actually think have more to do with breaches but could have been skimming. It's a valid concern you're right.Ice Cream Jonsey wrote: Fri Dec 15, 2023 3:50 pm I sure don't. I do not keep credit cards and credit card info on my phone. Re: The Saddest Christmas Moment
I liked using Apple Pay for a while before it just mysteriously stopped fucking working. Now every time I go to use it I get some dumb message like "see card for instructions". I swipe the SAME damn credit card that is associated with the Apple Pay app and it instantly works. I don't care enough to go looking at Apple forums and such to figure out why. Fuck off Apple Pay!

I was still enjoying Odell Lake, Number Munchers, Oregon Trail, and Jenny's Journey at my school at the time! One of the only things I looked forward to going to school for really. I loved those old Apple II computers at the time and getting to sit a station with color monitor was a treat.

Re: The Saddest Christmas Moment
Hell yeah. At the time they were asking us to bring our parents grocery store receipts that were colored green so that we could "upgrade" to add a few Apple GS workstations that were 90% used by the teachers lol. Fuckin Apple.Casual Observer wrote: Mon Dec 18, 2023 12:00 amI mean they were fine if the taxpayers were paying to keep em running. Re: The Saddest Christmas Moment
That was good. It defines exactly why I avoid Apple products.
A few years ago my boy switched phone carriers and jumped on the iPhone wagon. Now he upgrades his phone every year and has lots to complain about. Admittedly he's a gadget head* but it fills a small hole in his happiness soul. It makes him happy and that's what matters most.

Somebody needs to punch these people in the goddamn mouth. They wouldn't be saying these things if we lived in a society where you could be struck for your lies.

Let's instead live in a world where everyone is smart enough to recognize the Lies and corporate deception and adjust their wallets accordingly.

Tap to pay is magnitudes safer than using a physical card. JUST DO IT.
(And then you wont scar your poor nephew when you forget your wallet!)

Re: The Saddest Christmas Moment
I will set it up, and I would like to note that right now I try to pay for things in this order, usually:
1) Tap. I sit there like an idiot and tap it.
2) Chip. Insert it!
3) Slide.
So I will be adding a fourth method. It's okay. I am not complaining. In fact, the bar is low because of the nonsense I go through currently. If this one just works, then terrific!
