Legend of Amberland II (PC, 2023)

Post by Ice Cream Jonsey »

Legend of Amberland is a beautiful pixel graphics "CRPG," or character role playing game. The genre also have the term "blobber," as in, your guys act like a blob when fighting enemies. Think Bard's Tale, not Exodus: Ultima III for that.

Also Might & Magic! In presentation, that is what the first Legend of Amberland reminded me of. I didn't play it enough.

The creator has come up with a sequel, making two CRPGs with moving graphics in less time than it has taken me to do a much less complicated CRPG. My hat is off to Silver Lemur Games, which I understand is a one man? operation, Chris (Krzysztof) Koźmik.

Here it is.

Look at those bright, friendly graphics. That is what I need in my life right now, to be honest.

I created a party tonight and started my adventure and it's just as fun as the first one. These games want you to succeed, as Pinback has said about one of the new Doom games. I was told to go to a castle, but there were some goblins nearby that I could see, so I fucked them up. Badly! Ha ha! It's a cool thing that LoA2 does, that wasn't a part of many CRPGs: at least at the beginning here, I can see enemies and choose to move over there and attack them.

But okay everyone shut up, I have to post a screenshot of the best thing I have ever seen in a CRPG. When I went to rest, this was what was printed to the screen:

A quest reminder! Are you KIDDING me?! The #1 reason I stop playing CRPGs is because life gets busy and I get onto something and then I try to get back into them and can't remember what I am supposed to do. And this game solves that. If every rest gives you a reminder of what the current quest is, well, that is the greatest thing I can think of. Amazing.

These games are easy to love and I want it known that I am loving them. I am going to get my brother a copy because he has a little longing for Might & Magic but I don't think he can do the DOSbox or exoDOS thing.

I'm afraid CRPG is short for Computer Role-Playing Game

A rare miss from ICJ.
Am I a hero? I really can't say. But, yes.

This is shattering me to my core. I am enraged with rage! I don't know where I read what I am about to say. Maybe I made it all up.

I thought the "c" being for character meant you make your character. Like, Blade Runner is an RPG, but you don't really make your dude, it's Ray whatshisface. Ray Bladerunner. Whereas in games like Exodus, Wizardry, Legend of Amberland, Diablo you do. And then JRPG took care of the games where you have the dudes on the screen for visuals only and you choose what they do and then the combat plays out with animation, like Final Fantasy III and so forth.

But no, none of that was true, all of that was wrong and now I have something even better: knowledge. I thank you. And I appreciate nobody making a snotty comment that directs shame to my ignorance.

I really need to start reading these threads from top to bottom before replying.
